RENO, Nev. - A trip to face Pac-12 power California highlights the non-conference schedule for the Nevada women's basketball team in the 2014-15 season.
"This year's non-conference schedule will prepare us for a tough Mountain West conference," head coach Jane Albright said.
The year kicks off Nov. 7 with an exhibition contest at Lawlor Events Center against the Academy of the Arts. The Wolf Pack remains at home and welcomes UC Santa Barbara to Reno for the regular-season opener Friday, Nov. 14. Nevada defeated the Gauchos by an 11-point margin a season ago in Santa Barbara and has won the last two meetings with UCSB.
Following the home opener, the Pack hits the road for three games starting with the trip to Berkeley, Calif. on Nov. 18 to take on the Golden Bears. Cal reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season and finished the year as the 20th ranked team in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
The Pack will face another nationally-ranked opponent Nov. 22 when the team travels to Provo, Utah to take on Brigham Young. As a 12-seed in 2013-14, the Cougars defeated two top-five seeded teams to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16, bowing out to eventual tournament champion Connecticut.
Nevada concludes the three-game road swing on Tuesday, Nov. 25 by making the drive over to the Bay Area to square-off with San Francisco. The Wolf Pack and the Dons have not met since the 2007-08 season.
The team returns to Lawlor for the annual John Ascuaga Nugget Classic Nov. 28-29 with Utah, Ole Miss and Portland all making the journey to Reno. The Pack will play Portland on the first day of the tournament and either Utah or Ole Miss on day two.
"We're fortunate to partner with the John Ascuaga's Nugget once again to bring SEC, Pac-12 and West Coast Conference teams to Reno," Albright said.
Nevada will kick off the month of December with a home contest against the University of the Pacific on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 6:30 p.m. The following Sunday, Dec. 7, the Pack makes the trek down to Phoenix, Ariz. to take on Grand Canyon for just the second time in program history. This year's `Kid's Game' will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 11 a.m. as the Pack takes on Cal State Stanislaus for the first time since the 1982-83 season.
Albright and her squad wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule Dec. 19-20 by heading south to The Big Easy to take part in the New Orleans Shootout hosted by Basketball Destinations. On Friday, the Pack battles against Toledo for the second time in program history. The Wolf Pack and Rockets met previously in the 2012 John Ascuaga Nugget Classic championship, with Nevada coming out the victors in the game. Saturday, Dec. 20 marks the final non-conference contest for the Pack, taking on yet another NCAA Tournament team from last season in Oregon State.
The 2014-15 Mountain West conference schedule will be released at a later date.
