The Wolf Pack women’s basketball team fell 61-57 to Utah Saturday evening at the John M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
With the loss, Nevada falls to 4-5 on the season, while Utah improves to 3-4 on the year.
Utah began the game with an early 16-6 lead. Nevada forward Amber Smith hit a jumper from the top of the key halfway through the period to make the score 21-12. The Wolf Pack went a stretch of three minutes where the team hit 5-5 of its attempts from the field. Julia Shelbourn got Nevada within four of Utah at 25-21 with a basket in the paint with 6:31 on the clock. Moe led all scorers at halftime with 13 points, where Nevada trailed Utah 36-28.
Nevada senior guard Arielle Wideman cut the deficit to 41-36 with two made shots at the free throw line. A three-pointer by Utah forward Ciera Dunbar ended a 6-0 Nevada run to give the Utes a 51-42 lead with 9:10 to play. A pair of free throws by Nyasha LeSure with 4:14 on the clock closed the gap to 53-50. Danika Sharp responded to four consecutive points from Utah with a made three to bring the score to 57-53 with two minutes left in regulation. LeSure’s jump shot at the free throw line cut the Utah lead to 59-56. Nevada’s full court pressure led to a steal by Danika Sharp and a trip to the free throw line for Moe, where she made one-of-two to get within 59-57 of the Utes with under a minute to play. Utah made several free throws and came up with a late offensive rebound on a miss to win the game 61-57.
Moe led Nevada with 16 points, while Mimi Mungedi recorded her second career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Danika Sharp finished with 11 points.
Nevada will host Grand Canyon Tuesday 11 a.m. at Lawlor Events Center. The game is free to the public, as the team has partnered with the Washoe County School District for a “When I Grow Up” field trip event.
