The University of Nevada women's basketball team opened up the annual John Ascuaga’s Nugget Classic with a 71-69 win over Butler

With the win, Nevada improves to 2-2 on the season, while Butler drops to 1-3.

Nevada started the game on fire, jumping to a 9-0 lead over the Bulldogs by the 16 minute mark. The Wolf Pack shot an impressive 60 percent from the field in the first half, hitting 15-25 of their shot attempts. Kate Kevorken led Nevada’s offensive production with 13 points. Butler got back in the game with their ability to knock down long distance shots, connecting on 7-11 of their three point attempts. Butler took a three point lead over Nevada heading into halftime.

Nevada and Butler continued to remain hot from the field to start the second half. The Pack committed to feeding the ball inside to the post early, allowing Kayla Williams to operate effectively in the paint. Danika Sharp found her shot in the second half, hitting several key three-point shots to keep Nevada ahead. Butler cut into the Wolf Pack’s lead and the two teams were tied with 22 seconds left in the game. Nevada went ahead by two to win the game after Kayla Williams grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back in as she was fouled. Kate Kevorken led all scorers with 23 points, Kayla Williams had 16 points with nine rebounds, and Danika Sharp added 13 points.

Nevada advances to the John Ascuaga’s Nugget Classic championship game where they will face No.16 Penn State Saturday night at 7 p.m. Iowa State and Butler will play in the consolation game Saturday at 5 p.m.
