RENO, Nev. -
The University of Nevada women’s basketball team fell 73-61 to Toledo in the championship game of the annual John Ascuaga’s Nugget Classic.
With the loss, Nevada drops to (3-2, 0-0 MW) on the season while Toledo improves to (4-1, 0-0 MAC).
The Rockets defense was stingy in the opening half, creating 15 points off of turnovers by the Wolf Pack. Toledo built up an 18 point lead at the 11:22 mark. Nevada’s offense sputtered to start the game, as the team went 8-27 from the field in the first period. Toledo led 46-24 at halftime.
Toledo resumed its strong play in the second half, getting out to a 33 point lead midway through the period. A jumper by Nevada freshman Nyasha LeSure started a late surge by the Pack, where the team cut the deficit down to 12 within the game’s final 10 minutes. That would be the closest Nevada would get, as Toledo claimed the 2012 Nugget Classic championship with a 73-61 win. Junior Danika Sharp led Nevada with 12 points. Freshman Terilyn Moe had 10 points. Toledo’s Janelle Reed-Lewis led all scorers with 15.
Nevada will close out its three-game homes stand next Sunday with a game against Cal Poly. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Lawlor Events Center.
