The University of Nevada women’s basketball team fell to UNLV 80-63 Saturday afternoon in a "Governor's Series, presented by NV Energy" contest at Cox Pavilion.
With the loss, Nevada drops to (7-20, 2-12 MW) on the season while UNLV improves to (11-17, 7-7 MW).
The Rebels lead the Wolf Pack 13.5-10.5 in the Governor's Series, presented by NV Energy, with wins by both UNLV basketball programs today.
The Lady Rebels jumped out to an early 14-3 lead. Mimi Mungedi scored five consecutive points for the Wolf Pack to cut the deficit to 19-13 at the 13:45 mark. UNLV forward Rejane Verin’s jumper in the key gave her team a double-digit lead of 31-20 with seven minutes left in the half. Arielle Wideman’s runner in the paint brought the score to 44-35 at 2:12 to go before the half. Nevada trailed UNLV 45-36 at the break. Mungedi led the Wolf Pack with nine first half points off of the bench.
UNLV began the second half on a 9-0 run to increase its lead to 54-36. Mungedi continued her dominance in the post, reaching double-figures in the points scored column with a made basket at the 15:42 mark. A made three-pointer by Arielle Wideman got Nevada within 12 points of UNLV at 59-47 with 11 minutes to play. The Lady Rebels stretched the lead to 64-47 on a shot from downtown by Danielle Miller. The Wolf Pack climbed back within single-digits at 66-57 on a layup by Chanelle Brennan with five minutes left in regulation. UNLV closed out the game on a 14-6 run to win the game 80-63.
Chanelle Brennan led Nevada with 15 points. Mimi Mungedi finished the game with 12 points and six rebounds. Arielle Wideman added 11 points and eight rebounds. Danika Sharp had 10 points and five rebounds.
The Wolf Pack will play its final road regular season game Wednesday evening, with a match up against New Mexico in The Pit. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
