RENO, Nev. – Six Nevada tennis players were honored by the Western Athletic Conference for their regular-season performances on Thursday with the announcement of the 2012 All-WAC Tennis Award Winners. The Nevada men earned four honors as a team, with the women tallying three of their own.
On the men’s side, Wessim Derbel earned his second first-team singles honor (2010, 2012) and the fourth singles honor of his career. He has also been a second-team performer on two occasions (2009, 2011). He was 24-8 overall and 14-6 in dual play this season.
Derbel was also named second-team all-WAC in doubles play alongside Fernando Sunago. The pair was Nevada’s most consistent, going 10-9 in dual play at the No. 1 position.
Moez Echargui made a splash with 16 wins in his first season at Nevada, earning WAC Freshman of the Year honors in the process. He was 11-8 in dual play and closed the season on a three-match winning streak.
Victor Ouvrard closed out Nevada’s honors with a second-team singles honor, the first of his career. He was second in singles wins for the Wolf Pack this season with 18. He won his last three singles matches and posted a 12-8 record in dual play.
Okhremchuk’s 20 overall wins were enough to garner first-team singles honors for the second year in a row. She played out of the No. 1 position in 16 of Nevada’s 17 matches during the dual season. She was 10-6 in those matches.
Verberne was tabbed a second-team singles performer for the third consecutive year after an 18-13 overall record. Playing out of the No. 2 position for the majority of the season, she posted a 10-7 record in dual play.
As a team, Okhremchuk and Verberne were named second-team all-WAC in doubles competition. 6-1 in dual play and 3-1 in WAC matches, the duo closed the season on a six-match winning streak.
