RENO, Nev. - University of Nevada junior Laurent Garcin and freshman Wessim Derbel were selected by the Western Athletic Conference this week for All-WAC teams.
Garcin was named first team All-WAC in singles for the third consecutive season. As Nevada (12-6) enters the WAC Championships in Honolulu, Hawaii, Garcin is 15-8 this season in singles. In dual competition, Garcin is 12-4, all in the No. 1 position. With the 15 wins this season, Garcin now sits in third in Nevada’s all-time career singles wins list with 58 career wins. Next on the list is Chris Long (1979-84), who sits in second with 63 career wins.
Derbel was named second team All-WAC in doubles. Since joining Nevada in January, Derbel has compiled a 14-3 record in singles. Derbel has played most of the season in the No. 2 position, compiling a 10-3 record. Derbel has also played in the No. 1 position twice and won both of them. Derbel also became the first freshman in school history to become ranked in singles when he was ranked No. 123 on March 31.
Nevada, entering the WAC Championships as the fourth seed, takes on fifth seed New Mexico State in the quarterfinal on Friday at noon PT. The winner will meet top seed and No. 20 Boise State on Saturday at noon PT.
