IRVINE, Calif. -- The University of Nevada men's tennis team opened up the season in a big way, earning eight victories against UC Irvine in it's opening dual match 6-1.
The year started in Irvine on Tuesday with doubles play, where the Wolf Pack earned victories in all three matches. The first win came from newcomers Robert Allan and Andrew Poustie, as they defeated the team of Caryl Hernandez and Tyler Pham 8-4 to earn the first doubles victory of their careers.
Moez Echargui and Quinten Mege delivered the next victory after they were able to pull out a nailbiter against Shuhei Shibahahra and Jonathan Hammel 8-7 (7-0).
In singles action, the Wolf Pack notched 5 victories, the first from Mege. He rolled in his match against Caryl Hernandez to a 6-2, 6-2 win.
Sunago added the second singles victory, as he outlasted and defeated Jonathan Poon in two extended sets 6-0, 7-6 (8-6).
ITA Mountain Region Singles No. 10 Ouvrard also notched a singles win in his match against Tyler Pham. He cruised to victory in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
In a match that took three all three sets to decide, Poustie battled against Ryan Cheung before he was able to secure a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory. It was Poustie's first career singles victory.
In the last match of the day, newcomer Allan outlasted Shuhei Shibahara 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 for his first singles victory of his career and the last point of the day.
The next match for the Wolf Pack is on Jan. 19 against Northern Arizona.
