Smith Named WAC Golfer of the Month

DENVER Nevada’s Scott Smith and San Jose State’s Erica Moston have been named the Western Athletic Conference Golfers of the Month for September.

Smith, a sophomore from Fallon, Nev. (Churchill County HS), finished in the top five in both of Nevada’s tournaments last month.  At the San Francisco Intercollegiate, Sept. 8-9, Smith matched his best career finish with a tie for third after shooting a three-round total of 214 (70-74-70, +1).  He then tied for fourth at the Giustina Memorial Classic, Sept. 22-23, in Corvallis, Ore., with a three-under 213 (70-72-71).  His play helped Nevada finish in a tie for first as a team.  He was at or under par in five of his six rounds in September and had a 71.17 stroke average.

Moston, a senior from Belmont, Calif. (Notre Dame HS), began the season with two top-six finishes in two tournaments played in September.  At the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic in Colorado, Sept. 8-9, Moston finished in sixth with a four-under 212 (71-72-69).  It was the highest finish by a player from the four WAC teams participating in the tournament.  Moston returned to Colorado, Sept. 22-24, for the Ron Moore Intercollegiate and finished third with a six-under par 210 (68-72-70) and helped San Jose State to a third place finish in the 13-team field.  Moston shot par or better in all six rounds she played last month and averaged 70.33 strokes per round.
