NORMAN, Okla. – Nevada’s Kevin Lucas fired a 1-under 71 on Thursday and the senior is tied for 15th after the first day of the NCAA Regionals.
The 71 by Lucas marked the low score of the five individuals competing with 14 teams at the Norman Regional. The top five teams from each region along with the low individual not on one of those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
“Kevin did not have his best ball-striking round but he made up for it with a phenomenal short game today,” Nevada coach Jacob Wilner said. “He only had 22 putts on the round, which is just amazing.”
Lucas went out in 34 as he bogeyed the par-4 third hole but came back with a birdie at the par-3 sixth and then an eagle on the eighth, one of five eagles on that hole today. On the back nine, Lucas got to 3 under with a birdie at the par-4 10th hole. After four straight pars, he finished his round with a wild final four holes. Lucas bogeyed the 258-yard par-3 15th, parred the 16th and then birdied the 483-yard par-4 17th to get back to 3 under. But a double bogey seven on the par-5 18th brought him back to 1 under for the round.
Lucas will tee off Friday at 8:20 a.m. (Pacific) time.
