LIHUE, Hawaii – Nevada freshman Rhyne Jones carded a first-round 69 on Wednesday and is in fourth place at the John Burns Invitational hosted by the University of Hawai`i.
Playing the stunning Wailua Golf Course on the island of Kauai, Jones fired the second-best round of his young Nevada career and is five strokes off the pace set by Arizona’s Eric Oja, who had a 64 on Wedneaday.
“Rhyne had a very good round of golf and he continues to impress his teammates and coaching staff,” Nevada head coach Jacob Wilner said.
Nevada is sitting in 12th place overall after a 7-over 295. But the strong field is crowded and the Pack is just 10 shots back of second place Arizona (-3) with fifth-ranked Cal out in front at 10 under.
The second round of the tournament is Thursday with the final 18 holes scheduled for Friday.
