RENO, Nev. – The Nevada defense had an energetic performance on Saturday, registering four turnovers and generally taking the upper hand over the offense during the Wolf Pack football team’s second scrimmage of spring drills on Saturday at Mackay Stadium.

Defensive linemen Jordan Hanson and Jack Reynoso notched fumble recoveries and cornerback Markus Smith had a big interception during the two-minute drill for the defense. Freshman linebacker Alex Bertrando also had an interception during the scrimmage.

“The defense was flying around,” first-year coach Brian Polian said. “They played with more juice today.”

Junior quarterback Cody Fajardo was 17-of-26 for 132 yards with one interception (Smith). Freshman quarterback Tyler Stewart got the bulk of the reps after Fajardo and was 13-of-15 for 121 and a touchdown. Juco transfer Don Jackson carried the ball 13 times for 63 yards to lead all rushers.

The first-team offense did not find the end zone during the scrimmage. Nevada scored twice on the day – a 1-yard plunge by freshman back Chris Solomon and a 1-yard catch-and-run by sophomore receiver Dominic Coulter from Stewart.

Nevada will go through drills next week in preparation for the annual Silver and Blue Spring Game, which is set for 1 p.m. at Mackay. The game is open to the public and admission is free.
