Kaepernick Shines in Football Scrimmage

RENO, Nev. Sophomore quarterback Colin Kaepernick threw three long touchdown passes and ran for another score during the Wolf Pack’s second spring scrimmage on Saturday at Mackay Stadium.

Kaepernick, the Western Athletic Conference’s Freshman of the Year last season, had touchdown passes of 71, 65 and 55 yards and scored on a 1-yard run during the spirited scrimmage. He finished with 201 passing yards and 37 yards rushing.

“It was a good hitting scrimmage and we got some good film from it,” Nevada coach Chris Ault said.

The Wolf Pack defense gave up the long pass plays and one sustained drive from the offense, but held its own the rest of the time.

The defense had six sacks on the day and five more tackles for loss. Sophomore cornerback Kenny Viser forced the lone turnover on the day with an interception that he nearly returned for a touchdown.

Freshman receiver Tray Session made a pair of nice catches, including one on a pass from Kaepernick that covered 71 yards and a touchdown. Mike McCoy hauled in a 65-yarder for a touchdown and Marko Mitchell had the other touchdown catch from Kaepernick, a 55-yarder.
