RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada and Hall of Fame football coach Chris Ault have agreed upon a new two-year contract extension that will keep Ault at Nevada through the 2015 season, athletics director Cary Groth announced today.

“We are very fortunate to have Chris as our football coach and it’s important to have the consistency he brings as we transition to the Mountain West and beyond,” Groth said. “He consistently brings winning seasons, bowl game appearances and national recognition to our program, especially with the Pistol offense.

“This extension is something that Chris and I began discussions about a year ago and I’m happy that we were able to finalize it. I’m thrilled to be working with him as we move forward.”

Ault boasts a career record of 223-106-1 in 27 seasons at Nevada and is the only active coach in the College Football Hall of Fame. He is tied for the second in terms of most wins amongst active coaches with Mack Brown of Texas and trails only Frank Beamer (252) of Virginia Tech. The innovative Pistol offense that he created in 2005 is now widely used at all levels of football, including the NFL.

“I believe the history of our program has been enduring and sustaining,” Ault said. “I appreciate the confidence and support shared by our AD, Cary Groth, and President (Marc) Johnson. With our move into the Mountain West, these are truly exciting times loaded with challenges that will surely test our resolve. Change is inevitable, growth paramount and I’m looking forward to it.”

The extension of Ault’s current contract is pending Board of Regents approval and it will be submitted to the regents in June.

“Coach Ault exemplifies commitment, excellence and a winning tradition,” University of Nevada interim president Marc Johnson said. “He has built a successful program, and has put together a strong coaching staff to lead Nevada Wolf Pack football into the new Mountain West conference affiliation next year. We are pleased to have this opportunity to extend his contract.”

A University of Nevada graduate, Ault will begin his 28th season as Nevada’s head coach this fall. The winningest coach in school history, he has won nine conference titles in his career, including Western Athletic Conference titles in 2005 and 2010, and has taken the Wolf Pack to 15 postseason appearances with nine eight bowl appearances, including the last seven in a row.
