Nevada Hosts Drake In Mountain West-Missouri Valley Conference Challenge
Nov. 29, 2012 Drake at Nevada: Nevada (4-2) hosts Drake (2-3) in a Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge game on Friday at 7:05 p.m. The Wolf Pack improved to 4-2 after defeating UC Davis 84-83 on Deonte Burton's jump shot with 3 seconds to play on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs are 2-3 after going 1-2 at the DirectTV Tournament in Anaheim, Calif. last weekend. The Bulldogs lost two close games 73-70 to Cal and 74-70 to Xavier. DU defeated Rice 77-66 in the tournament. Friday, 7:05 p.m. PT TELEVISION: none DRAKE BULLDOGS: The Drake Bulldogs are 2-3 on the season after going 1-2 at the DirecTV Tournament in Anaheim, Calif. last weekend. DU head coach Mark Phelps is in his fifth season leading the Bulldog men's basketball program and has career mark of 64-72. Last season the Bulldogs went 18-16 and tied for third in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 9-9 record. DU has a balanced scoring attack with six players averaging between nine and 18 points per game. Senior forward Ben Simons (6-8) tops the team averaging 17.4 points per game. Another senior forward, Jordan Clarke, (6-8) averages a double-double scoring 12.4 points per game and grabs 11.2 rebounds per contest. Clarke was named to the DirecTV All-Tournament team. Guard Richard Carter (5-11) is scoring 10.4 points per game and is dishing out a team-high 3.8 assists per outing. Forward Joey King (6-9), center Seth VanDeest (6-11) and guard Chris Hines (6-0) average 9.2, 9.2 and 9.0 points per game respectively. The Bulldogs are averaging 78.4 points per game and hold opponents to 72.8. From the field they shoot 46.6 percent and opponents 42.8. An outstanding three-point shooting team they are connecting on 44 percent of their attempts and holding opponents to 29.4 percent shooting from behind the arc. On the glass they are being outrebounded 36.2 to 32.4. Since reaching the 1,000 point mark, the backcourt duo have continued to climb the Nevada scoring chart. Burton's 1,068 career points ranks 19th with former teammate Dario Hunt (2008-12) at 18th with his 1,103 points. Story is tied for 20th with Matt Williams (1987-91) with 1,062 points. See page 7 for a list of Nevada's 1,000 point scorers. Mr. clutch has come through three times this season in front of the home faithful. In the World Vision Classic with Nevada trailing CS Fullerton 77-75 he drove the lane scored and converted the free throw after being fouled to put the Pack up 78-77 with 14 seconds to play. It was not all offensive as he blocked a potential game winning layup at the other end of the court then sealed the victory with two more free throws to give him the last five points in a game the Pack won 80-77. He delivered the next night against Green Bay hitting a game-winning three-pointer from deep behind the arc with 2 seconds on the clock to give the Pack the 71-69 victory over the Phoenix. This coming after GB had just gone ahead 69-68 on a three-pointer. Burton's three-pointer gave him exactly 1,000 career points in the Silver & Blue. His most recent game winner came on Wednesday night as he hit a jumper in the lane with 3 seconds on the clock to give Nevada an 84-83 victory over UC Davis. He finished with a game-high 26 points. Video link to Burton's shots vs. Green Bay and UC Davis - CHANGING LEAGUES: After 12 seasons in the Western Athletic Conference Nevada will compete in the Mountain West for the first time this season. The MW sent four teams to the NCAA Tournament last season and had six schools advance to postseason play. In the preseason MW media poll Nevada was picked to finish fifth. San Diego State, UNLV, New Mexico and Colorado State placed ahead of the Wolf Pack. The Pack left the WAC in style winning its sixth regular season title in 12 years in the league. Nevada went 13-1 in WAC play last season. Coleman is scoring 3.8 points in 11 minutes per game. He reached double figures for the first time against Green Bay scoring 11 points in 13 minutes on the floor. The 6-9, 250-pound Fall is scoring 2.0 points and grabbing 2.3 rebounds per game in 11.3 minutes per contest. Against Southern Utah he scored in double figures for the first time finishing with 10 points and had five rebounds. Burton has scored in double figures in the last five games with three of those outings being game highs. In the last two games he scored 28 at Marshall and 26 versus UC Davis. Story tops the team with four 20 plus point games on the season. In the last three outing he has scored 73 points an average of 24.3 points per game. He had back-to-back 25 points games versus Southern Utah and at Marshall then followed that with 23 at home against UC Davis. He has been on fire from behind the arc the last three games making 12 of his last 24 attempts. The duo combined to score 53 of Nevada's 82 points at Marshall and 49 of the Pack's 84 points versus UCD. Carter is 66-41 in his fourth season leading the program. The 66 wins is one more than Jim Carey (1976-80) for the ninth most wins by a Pack head coach in school history. Carey went 65-46 in his four seasons directing the Wolf Pack. Trent Johnson (1999-04) is eighth with his 79-74 mark. Carter was Johnson's assistant all five seasons that he led the Pack basketball program. 100 YEARS OF WOLF PACK BASKETBALL: The 2012-13 season is the 100th year of basketball at the University of Nevada. The Wolf Pack's first year of basketball was in 1913 when the team went 3-1 under coach C.E. Holway. In 100 years there has been 17 coaches that led the Wolf Pack basketball program and three coached just one season. Nevada's overall record stands at 1214-1092. Story's 185 career three-pointers made is tied for third in school history with Jerry Hogan (1990-94). Next on the list is Terrance Green's (1999-03) 209 made in 110 games played. In 73 games Story has attempted 461 shots from behind the arc which is fourth most at Nevada. Hogan is third with 466. Story has been successful on 40.1 (185-of-461) percent of his three-point attempts which is eighth at Nevada. Last season Story attempted a Pack single season record 226 three-pointers and made 94 for a percentage of 41.6. The 41.6 percent ranked 24th in NCAA I and his 2.69 made per game was 37th. The 94 three-pointers made a year ago are second most in Pack history behind Jimmy Carroll's (1996-97) 96. As a sophomore he made 76 three-pointers which is the fourth best season in Pack history. Elliott scored a then career-high 10 points against Green Bay and topped that with a 13 point outing at Marshall. Those two performances are his only double figure scoring games in the Silver & Blue. In the Green Bay contest he played a career-high 30 minutes. From the field he is shooting 62.1 (18-of-29) percent. In the GB game he made five-of-seven shots and at MU was good on five-of-eight. For the season he is fourth on the squad averaging 7.7 points per game and is second in rebounding at four per contest. Panzer posted his career-high of 18 points in the Pack's 80-77 victory over Cal State Fullerton (11/16/12) in the first game of the World Vision Classic. The 6-9 forward made six-of-10 shots from the field which included two-of-three from behind the arc. He was also solid at the free throw line making four of his five attempts. On the season he is averaging 6.7 points to rank fifth on the team and his 4.5 rebounds per game is second.
