Nevada at UCI: Coming off one the most successful seasons in school history the 2012-13 edition of the University of Nevada begins the 100th year of Wolf Pack basketball on Saturday at UC Irvine at 7 p.m.. The Pack went 28-7 last year, the second most wins in school history, and captured a sixth Western Athletic Conference title.
UCI returns all five starters from a team that was 12-20 and 8-6 home. The Anteaters are picked to finish third in the preseason Big West Conference media poll.

SERIES HISTORY: Nevada leads the sereis with UC Irvine 13-5. The Pack has won the last seven meetings with the most recent being 74-63 in Reno on Feb. 19, 2011. Nevada is 4-3 in road games in the series and has won the last two away from Reno.
UP NEXT: Nevada returns home to host the World Vision Classic, Nov. 16-18. The three day tournament features Cal State Fullerton, Green Bay and Southern Utah.
UC IRVINE ANteaters: UC Irvine returns five starters and nine letterwinners for third-year head coach Russell Turner this season. Turner is 25-39 in his two seasons at UCI. Last year the Anteaters were 12-20 and 8-6 at home. The Anteaters were picked to finish third in the Preseason Big West Conference media poll.
Senior forward/guard Michael Wilder (11.5 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 2.4 apg) landed on the preseason BWC team after earning second-team honors at the end of last season. Another senior guard Daman Starring (11.4 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 3.1 apg) returns after being name the BWC honorable mention squad a year ago.
Guard Chris McNealy (10.2 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 3.1 apg) was selected to the 2012 BWC All-Tournament team. Senior forward/guard Adam Folker (8.2 ppg, 6.7 rpg) earned the 2012 BWC "Best Hustle" Award. Will Davis II is a 6-8 forward/center that averaged 7.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game and posted a school record 55 blocks last season. Senior guard Derick Flowers topped the Big West in conference play averaging 4.13 assists per game and chipped in 7.8 points per game and 3.2 assists per game on the season.
RACE TO 1,000: A pair of Pack guards senior Malik Story and junior Deonte Burton are set to begin a race to become the 23rd player in Nevada history to score 1,000 points when the season gets underway on Saturday night. Both have started all 67 games of their career's in the Silver and Blue and are just four points apart in the race to the milestone.
Story has amassed 958 points in his two seasons while Burton's total is 958. Leaving the back court duo 42 and 46 points respectively from 1,000. Farron Hand (1994-97) ranks 22nd in school history with his 1,034 points.
The last player to score 1,000 points was Dario Hunt (2008-12) who played two seasons with Story and Burton. Hunt finished his career last season with 1,103 points which is the 18th best total in school history.
SWITCHING IT UP: After 12 seasons in the Western Athletic Conference Nevada will compete in the Mountain West for the first time this season. The MW sent four teams to the NCAA Tournament last season and has six school advance to postseason play.
In the preseason MW media poll Nevada was picked to finish fifth. San Diego State, UNLV, New Mexico and Colorado State placed ahead of the Wolf Pack.
CARTER IN SEASON OPENERS: University of Nevada head coach David Carter is 2-1 in season openers. The trip to UC Irvine is the first time the Pack will open on the road in Carter's four seasons leading the Pack.
Nevada defeated Montana State 75-61 in 2009 and Montana 81-66 in 2010 to account for his two season opening victories. Last season the Pack lost at home to Missouri State 68-46.
ESPN BRACKETBUSTERS RETURN: Saturday's game at UC Irvine is a return contest from the 2011 ESPN BracketBusters when the Anteaters lost 74-63 at Lawlor Events Center on Feb. 19, 2011. It is also the second year in a row that the Pack is opening with a BracketBusters return game. Last year Nevada fell 68-46 at home to Missouri State.
Coach Carter is 0-2 in BracketBusters return games and 1-2 in BracketBusters games for an overall 1-4 record in the event.
100 YEARS OF WOLF PACK BASKETBALL: The 2012-13 season will be the 100th year of basketball at the University of Nevada. The Wolf Pack's first year of baseball was in 1913 when the team went 3-1 under coach C.E. Holway.
In 100 year their have been 17 coaches that led the Wolf Pack basketball program and three coached just one season. Nevada's overall record stands at 1210-1090.
CARTER ON THE WAY UP: Fourth-year head coach David Carter has a record of 62-39 heading into his fourth season. The 62 wins is the 10th most in school history and just three back of Jim Carey (1976-80) who was 65-46 in four season leading the Pack. Trent Johnson (1999-04) is eighth with his 79-74 mark. Carter was Johnson's assistant all five season that Johnson led the Pack basketball program.
FINN TO REDSHIRT: Junior guard Jordan Finn will sit out the 2012-13 campaign and use the year as a redshirt season giving him two seasons to play for the Wolf Pack. Finn is one of many in a crowded backcourt and allows coach Carter to have a fourth-year junior next season.
The current 15 man roster includes nine juniors and with the redshirt of Finn it allows the breakup of the large class. One of the nine juniors is Michael Perez who will sit out this season under NCAA transfer rules after playing the previous two seasons at UTEP.
BURTON HONORED: Nevada point guard Deonte Burton was named to the Mountain West preseason Media Team. Burton was one of four juniors and four guards on the five man squad.
The junior was also named the most under-the-radar player CBSSports and ranked as the 35th best point guard by CBSSports.com.
Honors are not something new to the Los Angeles native as he was the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, 2012 WAC Player of the Year and a 2012 AP honorable mention All-America to name just a few of his many honors.
STORY FROM LONG DISTANCE: In just two seasons senior sharpshooting guard Malik Story has put his name in the Wolf Pack record books. Story ranks in three career categories and his name appears on twp season lists.
His 170 career three-pointers made is tied with Jimmy Carroll (1996-98) for fourth in school history. Jerry Hogan (1990-94) is third with 185 made.
In 67 games he has attempted 423 shots from behind the arc which is fifth most at Nevada. Brandon Fields (2006-10) is fourth with 448. Story has been successful on 40.2 (170-of-423) percent of his three-point attempts to rank eighth. Boris King (1986-88) is seventh with a three-point percentage of 40.4.
Last season Story attempted a Pack single season record 226 three-points and made 94 for a percentage of 41.6. The 41.6 percent ranked 24th in NCAA I and his 2.69 made per game was 37th. As as a sophomore he made 76 three-points which is the fourth best season in Pack history.
The 94 three-pointers made is second most in Pack history behind Carroll's 96. His sophomore year total of 76 made ranks fourth.
VETERAN GROUP: Despite the loss of frontcourt seniors Dario Hunt and Olek Czyz, Nevada returns three starters and 10 total letterwinners from last years 28-7 team that advanced the quarterfinals of the National invitation Tournament leaving them one game short of playing at New York's Madison Square Garden.
Guard Deonte Burton, Malik Story and Jerry Evans, Jr. started all 35 games last season. Burton and Story have started all 67 games in their Pack careers while Evans has started 55 and the last 49.
Forward Devonte Elliott has played in all 67 games during his Pack career and started three. Junior forward Kevin Panzer has played in 66 of a possible 67 contests and started 10. Senior guard Patrick Nyeko saw action in all 35 games last season and has played in 76 in his first three years at Nevada.
