RENO, Nev. - Former University of Nevada assistant coach and head coach of the 2013 College World Series champion UCLA Bruins, John Savage will be the featured speaker at the 30th annual Bobby Dolan Baseball Dinner on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014. The dinner is being hosted by the Silver Legacy Resort and Casino in downtown Reno.
No host cocktails begin at 5:30 p.m. and the dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $150 per person for the meal that includes a sit-down dinner. Savage, a native of Reno, started his coaching career as the pitching coach at Reno High School during the 1988-89 school year. From 1992-96 he was an assistant coach for the Wolf Pack and helped the squad to a 177-82 record in five seasons. The Pack won the 1994 Big West Conference title and posted back-to-back 35 win seasons during his time at Nevada.
After leaving Nevada he was an assistant coach at USC helping the Trojans win the 1998 College World Series title. Savage was named the head coach at UC Irvine and let the Anteaters to the school's first NCAA I championship appearance.
In his ninth season at UCLA, Savage guided the Bruins to the 2013 NCAA I World Series championship. The 2013 squad went 49-17 overall and 10-0 in postseason play to capture the title. It was the third time in the last four seasons UCLA advanced to the CWS and the second time they reached the finals. The 2010 team finished second.
After leading the Bruins to the CWS Championship, Savage was named the National Coach of the Year by Collegiate Baseball, Baseball America, the ABCA and Perfect Game USA.
