RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada baseball team begins its Silver and Blue Series today at Peccole Park starting at 9:00 a.m. The series is free and open to the public. Games will be played at 9:00 a.m. on Oct. 25-26, 28-29 and Nov. 1. The Oct. 29 and Nov. 1 games will be played if necessary.
The Pack returns six starting position players and three weekend pitchers from last year's team that went 36-22-1 and 14-9-1 in Western Athletic Conference play. Heading the list of returners is senior Brock Stassi who earned WAC Pitcher of the Year honors after going 7-4 with a 3.43 ERA last season. Stassi could see time at first base this season after hitting .364 with nine home runs and 55 RBI as the team's designated hitter in 2010.
Outfielders Nick Melino and Brian Barnett return after garnering second team WAC honors last season. Melino led the team with a .388 average and drove in 35 runs playing left field. Barnett topped the team with 18 home runs and 71 RBI playing right field.
Freshman All-America Tom Jameson who post 6-1 record with a 3.84 ERA returns for his sophomore year on the mound. The third member of the weekend rotation that returns is senior Jeremy Cole who went 4-3 with a 4.95 ERA and was honored as a second team WAC selection.
Starters also returning this year include catcher Carlos Escobar, third baseman Garrett Yrigoyen and second baseman Joe Kohan who will move to shortstop for his junior year. Head coach Gary Powers and his staff welcomes 15 new players to the roster this season looking to fill the spots vacated by graduation.
