Nevada's Season Ends In Extra Innings At WAC Tournament
MESA, Ariz. - The University of Nevada (36-22-1) baseball team saw its season end in extra innings falling to San Jose State University (23-36) 7-6 in 10 innings at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Ariz. The Wolf Pack end their year at 36-22-1 while the Spartans improved to 23-36.
With the game tied 5-5 Nevada loaded the bases in the top of the 10th inning but were only able score a run on shortstop Kevin Rodland's RBI single to take a 6-5. SJSU scored twice in the bottom of the 10th to win the game 7-6. Spartan pitcher/designated hitter Zack Jones singled up the middle with two outs with the bases loaded to score the winning runs.
Nevada jumped to a 4-0 lead scoring two runs in the second and third innings to take the early lead. Catcher Carlos Escobar had a sacrifice fly and right fielder Waylen Sing Chow had an RBI triple in the second inning. Left fielder Nick Melino's single in the third inning scored both Pack runs.
SJSU scored twice in the bottom of the third inning on ground outs and two more in the fifth inning on a ground out and a sacrifice fly to tie the score at 4-4. Nevada regained the lead with a run top of the sixth inning when second baseman Cullen Mahoney's single scored Rodland.
Jones hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game send it into extra innings where he once again delivered with his game winning two RBI single.
Reliever Tyler Graham (4-6) suffered the loss giving up the two runs in the 10th inning. Jones (5-1) earned the win giving up two runs on three hits in his five innings on the mound.
Rodland (3-for-5,2R,RBI) and Melino (2-for-3,R,2RBI) led the team with three and two hits respectively. Melino finished with a team-high two RBI.
SJSU left fielder Tim Quiery (3-for-5,2R,RBI) and Jones (2-for-5,R,3RBI) led the Spartans with three and two hits. Jones drove in three and second baseman Karson Klauer two.
