Barnett Drives In Seven And Stassi Pitches A Shutout As Pack Down Sac State 11-0 To Take Series
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -University of Nevada (30-19-1, 11-8-1 WAC) designated hitter Brian Barnett belted two home runs and drove in seven while lefty Brock Stassi tossed a shutout as the Wolf Pack defeated Sacramento State (17-32-1, 6-14) 11-0 at Hornet Field Sunday afternoon to win the weekend Western Athletic Conference series 3-1. With the victory Nevada won its 30th game of the season, reaching the 30 win mark for the seventh time since 2000.
Nevada scored four times in the top of the first inning to stake Stassi to an early lead. Barnett drove in two of the runs with his second triple of the season. In the third inning he blasted his first home run of the game driving in two to put the Pack on top 6-0.
The Pack scored five times in the top of the sixth inning to close out the scoring. Barnett's second home run of the game scored three to make the final score 11-0.
While Barnett was driving home runs Stassi (6-4) was silencing the Hornet bats allowing three hits and struck out six to win his sixth game of the season. The six wins ties him for the team lead as does his third complete game of the season. Sac State starter Brandon Sandoval (2-4) allowed 11 runs, seven earned and suffered the loss.
Barnett (3-for-3,3R,7RBI) was perfect at the plate collecting three hits, walking once and driving home a career-high seven which is also the high by Nevada player this season. His 13 home runs lead the team as does his 56 RBI. Second baseman Cullen Mahoney (2-for-3,2R,RBI) and first baseman Shaun Kort (2-for-4,2R) both had two hits in the game. Left fielder Nick Melino (1-for-3,R,RBI) extended his hit streak to 15 games with an RBI single in the first inning.
Hornet catcher Justin Lamb (2-for-3) had two of Sac State's three hits in the game.
Nevada will host UC Davis on Tuesday evening at Peccole Park with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
