Nevada Closes Out Home Schedule Hosting SJSU: Nevada (27-21, 7-5 WAC) will play is final home games of the season this weekend when San Jose State (21-22, 5-7 WAC) comes to Peccole Park for a three-game Western Athletic Conference series. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday's games slated to start at 1 p.m.
Nevada enters the weekend tied for second in the WAC standings with New Mexico State at 7-5 mark while the Spartans are fifth at 5-7. Nevada won three of the four regular season games last season from the Spartans. But SJSU won the two in the WAC Tournament with the final one knocking the Pack from the tournament.
Seniors Honored Sunday: Nevada will honors its seven seniors prior to first pitch on Sunday. Garrett Yrigoyen, Joe Kohan, Matt Gardner, Troy Marks, Jayson McClaren, Bryan Suarez and Tim Culligan will be recognized for their contributions to Wolf Pack baseball.
Powers Earns 900th Victory: Nevada's 10-5 victory over San Francisco on April 17 was the 900th for Wolf Pack head coach Gary Powers. All of Powers wins have come in his 30 seasons directing the Nevada baseball program. His now 907 victories ranks 21st among active NCAA I coaches.
Jameson Nearing Marks: Junior right-hander Tom Jameson is close to cracking a couple of Nevada's top 10 lists after his 12 starts this season. Jameson has 18 career victories and one more would tie Scott Anderson (1986-88), Mark Titchener (1986-88) and Brock Stassi (2008-11) for 10th all-time. He could end the season in the top 10 in ERA as his 1.90 would rank second best in a season and his career ERA of 3.56 is seventh best at this time in Pack history. The 10th ranked pitcher in Pack history in innings pitched is Chad Qualls (1999-00) who pitched 235.2 innings in his two seasons. Jameson is 10.2 back of catching Qualls for 10th.
Quality Starts: Nevada's weekend rotation of Bradey Shipley, Tyler Wells and Tom Jameson has combined to make 21 quality starts in their combined 36 starts. A quality start is pitching six or more innings and allowing three or less earned runs.
Shipley leads the team with nine in his 12 starts this season. He has quality starts in his last six outings and eight in his last nine games. The Pack is 7-5 in his 12 starts and 6-3 in his quality starts.
Jameson has eight quality starts in his 12 trips to the mound. He has made four quality starts in a row and six in the last seven. The one in the last seven that did not qualify came at New Mexico State when he pitched four scoreless innings but left the game with tightness in his forearm. Nevada is 8-4 when Jameson starts on the mound 7-1 in his quality starts.
The freshman Wells has four quality starts to his credit. Two of his quality starts came in the second and third weeks of the season. His last quality start was a victory over Louisiana Tech on Apr. 14 when he allowed three earned runs in 6.2 innings on the mound. Nevada is 6-6 when Wells has started a game and 4-0 in his quality outings.
Gardner Closing It Out: Senior Matt Gardner has been the Pack's closer the last two seasons and will leave his mark on the Nevada record book when his career is completed. Gardner pitched a perfect ninth inning on versus St. Mary's on May 1 to record his 10th save of the season which ties him with Rico Lagattuta (1995) and Tyler Graham (2010) for the best season in school history. His 16 career saves is now second to Lagattuta's 24.
Gardner's tops the WAC in saves and is 22nd nationally.
Team Notes: The Wolf Pack is 27-21 and 7-3 in its last 10 games ... Nevada's 27 wins is three more than all last year when the team finished 24-31 ... Nevada's 56 double plays leads the WAC and is second in the country ... Of the Pack's 21 home runs 11 have been solo shots of which four lead off an inning ... Nevada's only series sweep was taking all three WAC games at home from LA Tech ... The Pack ranks 28th in nation in hit by pitch and 11th in sacrifice bunts ... In Nevada's 15-4 victory over Pacific (4/24) the Wolf Pack scored a season-high 15 runs on a season-high 20 hits, of the 20 hits nine went for extra bases, four doubles, three triples and two home runs ... The Pack's 36 total bases vs. Pacific (4/24) is tied with NMSU for the most in a game by a WAC team this season ... Nevada's 24 triples is nearly three times as many as the next closest team in the WAC as New Mexico State has nine ... In the latest NCAA rankings Nevada is eighth in triples and ninth in triples per game ... The Pack is 1-3 in extra inning contests, 11-10 in one-run games and 9-7 in games decided by five or more runs ... Nevada is third in hitting (.291), ranks fourth in pitching (4.09) and is fourth in fielding (.972) in the WAC ... At The Plate: Junior right fielder Brooks Klein hit .453 (24-for-53) during a 14-game hit streak that ended in game 2 vs. LA Tech and is the longest on the team this season and tied for the fourth longest -streak in the WAC this year ... Klein's eight home runs is tied the third most in the WAC and has the Pack's only grand slam of the season vs. USF (4/17) ... Klein tops the WAC in slugging percentage (.598) and ranks in seven additional offensive categories in the conference ... Klein leads the Pack with 11 multiple RBI and 16 multi hit games ... Infielder Garrett Yrigoyen had a career-high four hits and four RBI in the Pack's game with Oregon State (4/10) ... Yrigoyen (13) and Kyle Hunt (12) are one-two in the WAC in sacrifice bunts ... Nevada has the top four players in the WAC in triples; Joe Kohan (5), Klein (5), Jay Anderson (4), and Yrigoyen (3) ... Anderson has multiple hits in the last three games and three of the last four ... Anderson collected a hit in the first 11 games of the season and batted .310 (13-for-42) during the streak ... On The Mound: Nevada has used the same weekend rotation all season; RHP-Bradey Shipley, LHP-Tyler Wells and RHP-Tom Jameson have started every series ... Wells last start was pushed back a day and Jameson moved up one day ... Shipley was the Pack's starting shortstop last season and earned second-team All-WAC honors but has turned his attention to the mound in his sophomore season and is 7-3 with a 2.21 ERA ... Shipley leads the WAC in opponent batting average (.219), is second in ERA (2.21), is tied for second with seven wins, is ninth with 73.1 innings pitched and is seventh with 64 strikeouts ... Jameson pitched his second career shutout as the Pack blanked Fresno State 1-0 in the final game of the series ... Jameson allowed eight hits and earned WAC Pitcher of the Week honors for his efforts against FS ... Jameson has been involved in two 1-0 games this season pitching seven scoreless innings in the 1-0 victory at UNLV (3/4) ... Jameson has won six of his last seven decisions and is 6-2 with a 1.90 ERA ... Jameson did not allow a run until the ninth inning in his start at Sac State to earn his fifth win of the season ...
