Sadoian Homers Twice As Pack Knock Off Sacramento State 14-5
Reno, Nev. - University of Nevada(29-19, 16-9 WAC) senior Jason Sadoian homered twice and senior pitcher Rod Scurry(5-6) shook off a shaky start as the Wolf Pack knocked off Sacramento State(20-28, 11-13 WAC) 14-5 in the first game of a four-game Western Athletic Conference series at Peccole Park Friday night. With the victory the Pack remained one game back in the WAC standings and kept pace with conference leading Fresno State as they defeated San Jose State 11-3 tonight in Fresno, Calif. Nevada improved to 16-9 in WAC action and 29-19 overall while the Hornets dropped to 11-13 in conference play and 20-28 on the season.
After tying the game at 5-5 on Sadoian's leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the second inning Nevada scored the final nine runs of the game to claim victory. In the top of the fourth inning designated hitter Terry Walsh broke the tie with an RBI ground out and second baseman Nick Leid tripled home a run to put the Pack on top for good at 7-5. Right fielder Mike Hale's seventh home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth was a two run shot that made it 9-5.
Sadoian's second home run of the game lead off the bottom of the seventh and increased the advantage to five at 10-5. First baseman Shaun Kort's single scored the second run of the inning and Walsh's double scored him and it was 12-5. The final two runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning when Sadoian and third baseman Jason Rodriguez had RBI singles to make the final score 14-5.
Sac State scored twice in the top of the first but Nevada answered with four in the bottom of the inning. Both teams were charged with an error that led to four of the six combined runs being unearned. The Hornets regained the lead 5-4 in the top of the second inning scoring three times on two hits. Two of the runners that scored reached after being hit by pitch.
Scurry then settled down as he allowed just one hit over the next six innings and struck out seventh to win his fifth game of the season. He allowed five runs, four earned on six hits in his eight innings on the mound. Sac State reliever Alvaro Orozco(4-2) was tagged with the loss giving up seven runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of action.
Sadoian(4-for-6,2R,3RBI) finished with a game-high four hits and drove in three with two coming on his two solo home runs. It marked the first two home run game of his career. Left fielder Matt Bowman(2-for-4,2R), Kort(2-for-5,2R,RBI), Walsh(2-for-3,2R,3RBI) and Hale(2-for-5,2R,2RBI) added two hits apiece as the team totaled 15 in the game. Walsh tied Sadoian for game-high honors with three RBI on the night.
The Hornets were led by outfielder Ryan Blair(2-for-5,2R,RBI) and third baseman David Flores(2-for-3,2R,RBI) who had two hits and an RBI each in the game.
The series continues on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to get underway at 1:00 p.m.
