Nevada Drops Sunday's Second Game 12-5 At Fresno State

Fresno, Calif. –  Nevada (24-22, 9-6 WAC) lost the final game of a four-game Western Athletic Conference series 12-5 to Fresno State (22-25, 6-10 WAC) at Pete Beiden Field on Sunday.  The two teams split the four-game series as the Wolf Pack swept Saturday’s doubleheader 15-11 and 16-4 while FS won Sunday’s first game 8-6.   The Pack is currently in first place in the WAC standings with a 9-6 mark and is 24-22 on the season.  The Bulldogs improved to 22-25 and 6-10 in conference play.

Nevada got a solo home run from left fielder Matt Bowman leading off the game but FS scored seven times in the bottom of the second inning.  Third baseman Tom Mendonca drove home three of the runs with his 20th home run of the season.  Second baseman Danny Muno scored two with his single. 

The Pack fought back in the top of the third inning scoring three times to close within three at 7-4.  Bowman, first baseman Shaun Kort and designated hitter Nick Melino each had an RBI in the inning.

FS scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning to take control of the game on the way to the 12-5 victory.  The Bulldogs got a two-run inside the park home run from left fielder Dusty Robinson and a three-run homer from right fielder Brennan Gowens in the big inning.

Pack starter Jayson McClaren (1-3) suffered the loss allowing four runs on three hits in 1.1 innings on the mound.  Holden Sprague (5-2) won his second game of the doubleheader tossing a complete seven-inning game giving up five runs, four earned on six hits.

Bowman (2-for-4,2R,2RBI) led the Pack with two hits and two RBI.  He hit his team leading eighth home run of the season leading off the game.

Robinson (2-for-4,2R,2RBI), first baseman Alan Ahmady (2-for-4,2R,RBI), Mendonca (2-for-3,2R,3RBI) and center fielder Gavin Hedstrom (2-for-3,R) had two hits each for FS.  Mendonca and Gowens tied for game-high honors with three RBI apiece.

Nevada returns home to host Sacramento State in the final four home games of the season next weekend at Peccole Park.  Friday’s first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.  Saturday’s doubleheader gets underway at 1:00 p.m.  Sunday’s single game will mark the final home contests for seven Pack seniors as they will be honored prior to the 1:00 p.m. first pitch on Mothers Day.
