Melino Homers Twice And Drives In Eight As Nevada Downs Fresno State 15-11 In Game One





Fresno, Calif. – University of Nevada (23-20, 8-4 WAC) freshman Nick Melino hit two homers and drove in eight runs as the Wolf Pack won the first game of two Western Athletic Conference games played at Pete Beiden Field in Fresno, Calif. today.  With the victory the Pack improved to 23-20 overall and 8-4 in the WAC while the Bulldogs fell to 20-24 on the season and 4-9 in conference play.

Trailing 4-1 the Pack scored seven times in the top of the fifth inning to move in front 8-4.  Melino hit his first home run of the game in the inning that scored three.  FS scored six times in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead 10-8.  Right fielder Steve Detwiler hit a grand slam as part of the Bulldogs big inning. 

The Pack scored the next seven runs, five in the fifth and two more in the sixth on the way to the 15-11 victory.  Melino drove in two with single in the fifth inning and his second home run of the game scored both runs in the seventh.

Reliever Beau Witsoe (1-0) earned the first win of his Pack career allowing three runs on four hits in 4.1 innings on the mound.  Witsoe did not allow a run in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings of the game.  FS reliever Zac Bischoff (2-6) was tagged with the loss giving up five runs on five hits in 3.2 innings on the mound.

Melino (3-for-4,3R,8RBI) was the hitting star with his three hits, two being home runs and eight RBI.  Center fielder Westley Moss (2-for-5,2R,), second baseman Joe Kohan (2-for-5,RBI) and shortstop Kevin Rodland (2-for-5,R,RBI) added two hits apiece as the team totaled 14 in the game.  First baseman Shaun Kort (1-for-5,2R,2RBI) drove in a pair in the game.

FS shortstop Isacc Vivas (3-for-4,R,RBI) led the Bulldogs with three hits and drove in a run.  Left fielder Dusty Robinson (2-for-5,3R,2RBI) and third baseman Tom Mendonca (2-for-4,2R,RBI) had two hits each.  Detwiler drove in a team-high four with his grand slam.  Robinson and first baseman Alan Ahmady (1-for-4,R,2RBI) each hit two-run homers in the game. 

The two teams will complete the series with a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon with game one scheduled to start at 1:05 p.m.
