Hawai`i Scores Five In The Ninth To Defeat Nevada 10-9

HONOLULU, Hawaii- The University of Hawai'i (22-21, 5-9 WAC) got a two-run homer from designated hitter Jeffrey Van Doornum in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the University of Nevada (23-16-1, 4-5-1 WAC) 10-9 in the first game of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader at Les Murakami Stadium Saturday afternoon.  The loss dropped the Wolf Pack to 23-16-1 on the season and 4-5-1 in WAC play.  UH improved to 22-21 and 5-9 in the conference action.

Nevada got a two-run homer from designated hitter Nick Melino in the top of the ninth inning to take a 9-5 lead but it would not be enough.  In the bottom of the inning UH center fielder Collin Bennett reached on an error by Pack shortstop Kevin Rodland.   Reliever Tyler Graham hit the next Rainbow hitter and then with one down walked left fielder Sean Montplaisier to load the bases.  Second baseman Kolten Wong's sacrifice fly scored the first run of the inning.  Third baseman Pi'ikea Kitamura followed with a two-RBI single and it was a one run game at 9-8.  Van Doorman's two-run homer gave the Rainbows the 10-9 victory.

UH scored twice in the bottom of the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead.  Nevada answered with a four-run top of the second to move in front 4-2.  Third baseman Garrett Yrigoyen doubled home two of the runs in the inning.

The Rainbows tied it at 4-4 with two in the bottom of the third inning.  Nevada tallied a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead at 6-4.  Melino double home one of the runs and pinch hitter Cullen Mahoney's sacrifice fly plated the other.  The Pack added a run in the top of the eighth and the two on Melino's home run in the top of the ninth to take a 9-5 advantage into the bottom of the ninth but it would not be enough as UH exploded for five runs to win 10-9.

Graham (2-4) suffered the loss allowing five unearned runs on two hits in his 1.2 innings on the mound.  Blair Walters (1-1) earned the win retiring the only hitter he faced in the game.

Melino (2-for-4,2R,3RBI), right fielder Brian Barnett (2-for-5,R) and catcher Carlos Escobar (2-for-3,RBI) led the Pack with two hits apiece.  Melino drove in three and Yrigoyen two.

Kitamura (3-for-5,2R,2RBI) and Van Doornum (3-for-5,2R,3RBI) had three hits each for UH.  Van Doornum tied Melino for game-high honors with three RBI.
