Nevada Travels To Defending College World Series And WAC Champion Fresno State Nevada (22-20, 7-4 WAC) just completed a 12-game home stand going 8-4, the last five were nonconference games but the final 12 games of the regular season will be Western Athletic Conferene contests beginning this weekend at the home of the defending College World Series and WAC Champion Fresno State (20-23, 4-8 WAC) Bulldogs. The Wolf Pack and Bulldogs square off on Friday night at Pete Beiden Field at 6:05 p.m. Saturday’s doubleheader gets underway at 2:05 p.m. with the fourth and final game of the series scheduled for 1:05 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. The two teams met nine times last season with each team winning three-of-four games at home. FS won the ninth game 6-4 in Ruston, La. to claim the WAC Tournament title. The Bulldogs hold a 26-18 series advantage in WAC play including a 16-6 record at Pete Beiden Field in conference play. Overall FS leads the series 68-44.
Pack Remain Tied Atop WAC Standings Nevada at 7-4 and Hawai`i at 9-6 remain tied atop the WAC standings. San Jose State and New Mexico State are tied for third with 7-5 and 9-7 records respectively. Louisiana Tech is fifth with a 7-9 conference mark. Sacramento State and Fresno State are tied for sixth with 4-8 records. This weekends WAC matchups have Nevada at Fresno State, San Jose State at Sacramento State and Louisiana Tech at Hawai`i while New Mexico State hosts Houston Baptist in a nonconference series.
Bowman Ties Overbay’s Doubles Record, Kort Eighth In Doubles: Senior Matt Bowman made his 62nd career double on Saturday versus CSU Bakersfield count driving home two runs to break a 2-2 tie and also tied Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Lyle Overbay (1996-99) for first on the Nevada career list. Bowman also ranks fifth with 743 at bats, sixth with 179 runs scored, is tied for fifth with 247 hits and is fifth with 200 games played. He could crack the top 10 in stolen bases with three more. Junior first baseman Shaun Kort doubled home a run on Tuesday versus UC Davis to break a tie with Matt Ortiz (1998-00) and move into eighth on the career doubles list. Two more doubles will tie Shane Slayton (1993-96) and Jacob Butler (2002-05) for seventh.
