Nevada Falls 5-4 After Late Rally at Sacramento St.
Sacramento, Calif. - The University of Nevada Wolf Pack (25-20, 9-6 WAC) baseball team came up short after a ninth inning rally and fell 5-4 to the Sacramento State Hornets (12-32, 7-14 WAC) on Sunday, May 29, at Hornet Field.
Down 5-3 in the ninth inning, the Pack got a one out double by junior Jason Rodriguez(2-for-5, R) who scored on an RBI single by senior Konrad Schmidt (3-for-5, 2R, RBI) with two outs. Junior Terry Walsh(2-for-5) followed Schmidt with his second single of the game to get runners on first and second base but senior Baker Krukow flied out to center to end the Pack's late rally.
The Hornets struck first by scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning but the Pack quickly answered when Schmidt scored on a wild pitch. The Hornets took the lead in the second inning on an RBI double by Gary Johnson to go up 2-1. Schmidt scored again in the fourth inning on a sac fly by senior Chris Siewert to tie the game at 2-2. Sacramento St. answered with a run in fifth inning on an RBI double by David Flores and added another one in the sixth on a solo home run by Montana Dye.
Junior Mike Hale(1-for-1, 2B) doubled as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning and scored on a throwing error on Hornet catcher Brett Tanigawa to cut the lead to one at 4-3. However, the Hornets scored an unearned run off a hit and two errors in the bottom half of the eighth to make the score 5-3 which proved to be the difference in the game.
Junior starter Kyle Howe(2-3) threw 6.1 innings and struck out six while allowing four earned runs tot take the loss. Sacramento St. starter Mick Joyce tossed seven innings and allowed only two earned runs on five hits and five walks to earn the win. The Pack left 11 runners on base and made three errors while the Hornets made one error and left nine on base.
Coming up for the Pack is UC Davis on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Peccole Park in the first of eight straight home games where Nevada is 15-4 this season. Following UC Davis, the Pack will play host to Louisiana Tech on May 4-6 (6 p.m/ 6 p.m./ 1 p.m.).
