Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short As Wolf Pack Fall 5-4 To UC Davis

Reno, Nev. - The University of Nevada(19-15) scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning but left two runners on base as UC Davis(20-14) was victorious 5-4 in a nonconference game on a cold and windy day at Peccole Park on Tuesday afternoon in Reno. The loss dropped the Wolf Pack to 19-15 on the season while the Aggies claimed their second win of the year over the Pack to improve to 21-14.

Nevada put two runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning to take the early 2-0 lead. Right fielder Shawn Scobee started the inning with a triple off the center field wall and left fielder Matt Bowman followed with his second home run of the season to stake the Pack to the early advantage.

UCD got a double from third baseman Grant Hirneise to start the third inning and a single by shortstop Brandon Oliver made it a one run game at 2-1. The Aggies took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. Designated hitter Jimmy Goetz singled to get things started and catcher Tyler LaTorre was then hit by pitch. A single by right fielder Kyle Irving loaded the bases for Hirneise whose singled score two runs and the Aggies led 3-2.

In the top of the seventh inning Aggie center fielder David Huffman singled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Oliver's ground out to make the score 4-2. UCD added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning when LaTorre walked and later scored on Hirneise's third hit of the game putting the Aggies in front 5-2.

Pack third baseman Eric Newman singled with one down in the bottom of the ninth inning to get the rally started. Pinch hitter Derek McNeil walked and catcher Brett Hayes was hit by pitch to load the bases. Pinch hitter Terry Walsh then delivered a single through the right side that scored two runs and put runners on corners for Nevada's three and four hitters in center fielder Jacob Butler and first baseman Ben Mummy. Unfortunately both struck out swinging to end the game as the Pack fell 5-4.


Nevada starter Jarad Mitchell(0-1) made his first career start and was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in 3.1 innings on the mound. UCD starter Paul Gonzales picked up the win allowing just two runs on three hits in five innings of action. Jeremy McChesney recorded the final two outs of the game to earn his first save of the season.

Six different Nevada players had a hit in the game. Bowman drove in two with his home run and Walsh plated the other two runs with his single.

Hirneise(3-for-4,R,3RBI) led the Aggies with three hits and three RBI. Goetz(2-for-4,R), and Irving(2-for-4) contributed two hits apiece to the 12 hit offensive attack.

Nevada travels to Fresno, Calif. this weekend to take on the Fresno State Bulldogs in a three-game Western Athletic Conference series beginning on Friday at 6:35 p.m. at Pete Beiden Field.
