Nevada Downs Utah Valley 7-5 To Take All Four Games In The Series
Reno, Nev. - The University of Nevada(21-14) baseball team completed a four-game nonconference sweep of Utah Valley(7-24-1) with a 7-5 victory in Sunday’s final game at Peccole Park in Reno. With the win the Wolf Pack improved to 21-14 on the season while the Wolverines dropped to 7-24-1.
Nevada struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. With one down left fielder Matt Bowman walked and scored on third baseman Jason Rodriguez' double to the left center field gap.
The Wolverines tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the top of the second inning. Catcher Kevin Arendse doubled with one down and eventually scored on shortstop Jake Rickenbach's RBI single up the middle. UVU threatened to take the lead in the inning but left the bases loaded.
In the bottom of the second inning the Pack scored a run to move back in front 2-1. Second baseman David Ciarlo singled, moved to second on catcher Tyson Jaquez' single and scored on center fielder Jason Sadoian's base hit. Bowman was hit by pitch to load the bases but Rodriguez popped out to shortstop to end the inning. Right fielder Mike Hale made it 3-1 with a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the third inning.
UVU closed within a run at 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning when right fielder Cole Anderson and center fielder Scott Croshaw hit back-to-back doubles. Nevada got the run back in the bottom of the fourth when designated hitter Terry Walsh singled home Sadoian who began the inning with a single and it was 4-2.
The Pack continued its string of scoring a single run in each inning with one in the fifth. With two down shortstop Kevin Rodland was hit by pitch and later scored on Bowman's RBI single.
The Wolverines got a two-out solo home run from third baseman Jace Brinkerhoff in the seventh to score their third run of the game. Bowman hit an inside the park home run in the bottom of the seventh inning when UVU left fielder Tyler Garretson ran into the wall trying to make the catch. Jaquez scored on the homer after he reached base on an error.
In the top of the ninth inning the Wolverines scored a pair of runs on Brinkerhoff’s two-out, two RBI double to make the final score 7-5. Both runners that scored on the double reached on walks. With the tying run at the plate Garretson grounded out to second base to end the game.
Reliever Mario Rivera(2-1) allowed two runs on three hits in four innings of action to earn his second win of the season. UVU starter Marcus Moore(4-5) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings of action.
Sadoian(2-for-4,R,RBI), Bowman(2-for-4,2R,3RBI), Walsh(2-for-4,RBI) and Jaquez(2-for-4,R) had two hits apiece to lead the team. Bowman tied for game high honors with three RBI.
Brinkerhoff(4-for-5,R,3RBI) produced a game-high four hits and drove in three for the Wolverines. Arendse(2-for-4,R) added two hits and scored a run in the game.
The Pack return to Western Athletic Conference action next weekend with a four-game series at Hawai`i beginning at 9:35 p.m. pacific time on Friday night.
