Nevada Unable To Hold Lead And Drop WAC Opener 11-7 At NMSU





LAS CRUCES, N.M.-  University of Nevada (15-12, 0-1 WAC) jumped to a 7-1 lead after three innings but were unable to hold the lead falling 11-7 to New Mexico State University (23-10, 1-0 WAC) at Presley Askew Field in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both schools.  With the victory the Aggies improved to 23-10 overall and 1-0 in conference play while the Wolf Pack dropped to 15-12 and 0-1 in WAC action.

Nevada took advantage of NMSU starter Daniel Simon's wildness to jump to the early lead as he walked six in his 2.1 innings on the mound.  In the first Simon walked four and hit two as the Pack scored three runs.  In the second the Wolf Pack scored to more runs to go in front 5-0.  Right fielder Brian Barnett doubled home one run and the other scored when designated hitter Brock Stassi hit into a double play with the bases loaded. 

NMSU scored a single run in the second to get on the scoreboard.  Simon was again wild in third inning as the Pack scored two more runs to take a 7-1 lead as he walked two more that eventually scored.

The Aggies got single runs in the third and fourth innings to close the gap to 7-3.  NMSU's big inning was the sixth  when they scored seven runs on five hits and were helped by three Nevada errors as they took the lead 10-7.  A solo home run in the eighth inning made the final score 11-7.

Pack reliever Beau Witsoe (2-2) suffered the loss giving up four runs on six hits in 2.1 innings on the mound.  Ryan Beck (1-0) got the win for NMSU tossing four innings of shutout baseball.  Justin Cooper (1) earned the save pitching two scoreless innings.

Shortstop Kevin Rodland (2-for-5,2R) and center fielder Westley Moss (2-for-4,2R,RBI) had two hits apiece to lead the team and both scored two runs.  Five different Pack hitters drove in a run.

Right Nate Shaver (3-for-4,2R,2RBI) and first baseman Leo Aguirre (3-for-5,2R,RBI) had three hits apiece to top the Aggies.  Shaver, shortstop Ryan Aguayo and designated hitter Mike Sodders finished with two RBI each.

The two teams will play a doubleheader starting at 3:05 p.m. Mountain on Saturday.
