Simas Hits Walk-Off Home Run As Nevada Defeats #23 Hawai`i 14-12 In 12 Innings
Reno, Nev. – The University of Nevada (15-16, 4-1 WAC) senior catcher Travis Simas hit a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Wolf Pack a 14-12 victory over #23 Hawai`I (20-11, 3-2 WAC) in the first game of a four game Western Athletic Conference series at Peccole Park tonight. With the victory the Wolf Pack moved into first place in the WAC standings with a 4-1 mark and are 15-16 overall. The Rainbows dropped to 3-2 in conference play and are 20-11 on the season.
With one down in the 12th second baseman Nick Lead singled to center field and Simas stepped to the plate. Facing an 0-2 count he hit the next pitch from reliever Lenny Linsky over the left center field fence to win the game. The home run tied designated hitter Matt Bowman, who hit one in the fifth inning for the team lead with six.
UH scored three runs on four hits in the top of the second inning to take the early lead. Left fielder Sean Montplaisir drove in the first run with a single and shortstop Greg Garcia’s double scored the next two. The Pack turned a double play to end the inning and keep the Rainbows from adding to their lead.
Nevada closed the gap to a run scoring twice in the bottom of the third inning. Bowman doubled home one of the runs and first baseman Shaun Kort’s single plated the other. The Pack scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take its first lead of the game. Leid’s triple scored left fielder Nick Melino after he reached on an error by Garcia. Leid scored on Simas’ ground out to third base.
The Rainbows sent eight players to plate in the top of the fifth inning and four scored as they regained the lead 7-4. Center fielder Kolten Wong delivered a two-run homer as part of the big inning.
In the bottom of the fifth inning Nevada scored twice to close within a run. Bowman led off the inning with his sixth home run of the season and Kort doubled home the second run of the inning.
Nevada retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kort drove in two of the runs and Melino’s sacrifice fly scored the other.
After the Rainbows tied the game in the top of the seventh inning pinch hitter Christian Johnson’s three-run homer put UH on top 12-9. The Pack again rallied to tie the score with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and that’s where it remained until Simas delivered the walk-off home run in the 12th inning.
Pack reliever Daniel Tinlin (2-0) pitched four innings of shutout baseball to earn the victory and improve to 2-0 on the season. Linsky (1-1) the sixth Rainbow pitcher in the game was tagged with the loss giving up the two runs on the home run.
Bowman (3-for-5,4R,2RBI), Kort (3-for-5,R,5RBI) and Simas (3-for-6,R,3RBI) led the Pack with three hits each. Jaquez (2-for-5,RBI) and Leid (2-for-6,2R,RBI) added two hits apiece as the team totaled 15. Kort drove in a game-high five on his 21st birthday. Simas had three RBI in the game while Bowman scored four runs and drove home a pair.
Wong (4-for-6,3R,3RBI) finished with a game-high four hits and tied Johnson for team-high honors with three RBI. Six other UH hitters collected two hits in the game as they totaled 18.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Friday evening.
