Hale Homers Twice To Power Nevada Past New Mexico State 11-1
Reno, Nev. - University of Nevada(17-13, 8-4 WAC) senior right fielder Mike Hale homered twice to power the Wolf Pack past New Mexico State(14-16, 4-4 WAC) 11-1 in a Western Athletic Conference game at Peccole Park Sunday afternoon. With the victory the Pack won three of the four games in the series to improve to 17-13 on the season and 8-4 in WAC play. NMSU is now 14-16 overall and 4-4 in conference action.
Hale hit his first two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning as Nevada held an early 2-0 advantage. The homer scored first baseman Shaun Kort who drew a walk to start the inning. In the third inning the Pack scored three runs to move in front 5-0. Designated hitter Terry Walsh, Hale and second baseman David Ciarlo each drove in a run in the inning.
Third baseman Jason Rodriguez hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning and it was 7-0. The homer scored Sadoian who singled. It was Rodriguez' team leading seventh home run of the season.
NMSU scored their only run in the top of the sixth inning when shortstop Richard Stout scored on a ground out by first baseman Chris Auten and it was 7-1.
Nevada sent six men to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning and four scored to increase the lead to 10 at 11-1. Kort doubled home the first two runs and Hale blasted his second home run of the game in the big inning.
Reliever Mario Rivera struck out the final two Aggies hitters in the top of the seventh inning with two men on base to preserve the victory by the WAC’s 10-run rule as the game was halted.
Pack starter Brock Stassi(2-0) won his second game of the week allowing just one run on four hits in 5.2 innings of action. Stassi struck out a career-high four in the game and walked three. On Tuesday he pitched the Pack to victory over UNLV. NMSU starter Kent Williamson(2-3) gave up seven runs on six hits in four innings and was tagged with the loss.
Hale(2-for-4,2R,5RBI), Sadoian(2-for-5,3R) and Rodriguez(2-for-3,R,2RBI) tied for game-high honors with two hits apiece. Hale drove in a career-high five with four coming on his two, two-run homers in the game. Rodriguez drove in two with his home run and Kort doubled home a pair.
Five different Aggie players had a hit in the game as they totaled five on the day. Auten accounted for their only RBI.
The Pack return to action on Tuesday with their final midweek game of the season at Pacific. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
