Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short As Pack Drop Game Two Of Doubleheader 5-4 To Utah Valley
Reno, Nev. – The University of Nevada (10-14) baseball team scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning but stranded the tying run at third base falling in the second game of a doubleheader 5-4 to Utah Valley University (7-17) at Peccole Park Saturday evening. With the loss the Wolf Pack dropped to 10-14 on the season while the Wolverines improved to 7-17. Nevada won the first game of the doubleheader 14-4 and Friday’s game 7-5.
Trailing 5-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning right fielder Matt Bowman walked and center fielder Westley Moss followed with a single off UVU reliever Jace Brinkerhoff to get the rally started. Shortstop Kevin Rodland struck out for the first out of the inning but first baseman Shaun Kort’s double scored Bowman as Moss moved to third base. Designated hitter Brock Stassi’s ground out scored Moss as Kort scampered to third base but there were now two out. Left fielder Nick Melino was hit by pitch and third baseman Tyson Jaquez stepped to the plate. On the first pitch to Jaquez he popped up to the catcher to end the game.
UVU scored single runs in the first and third innings to take an early 2-0 advantage while starter Justin Smith silenced the Wolf Pack bats. In the fifth inning Brinkerhoff who started the game at third base homered and catcher Kevin Arendse singled home a run and it was 4-0.
The Pack got on the score board in the bottom of the sixth when Kort doubled and later scored on Jaquez single up the middle. The Wolverines got the run back in the top of the seventh inning when designated hitter Sage Thorpe was hit by pitch with two down and scored as Arendse and right fielder Billy Burgess laced back-to-back singles to make the score 5-1.
Nevada’s second run of the game scored in the bottom of the eighth inning after Smith had left the game. Kort’s single chased Smith from the game, Stassi walked and Melino was hit by pitch to load the bases for Jaquez. Jaquez hit into a 5-3 double play as Kort scored. After a walk to second baseman Nick Lead, catcher Travis Simas struck out to end the threat and the ninth inning rally fell short.
Derek Achelpohl (1-3) gave up four runs on 11 hits and suffered the loss dropping to 1-3 on the season. Smith (2-3) won his second game of the season allowing two runs on five hits and struck out 11 in seven innings on the mound. Brinkerhoff (2) recorded his second save of the season, despite allowing two runs on two hits in the ninth inning.
Kort (3-for-5,2R,RBI) led the Pack with three hits while Moss (2-for-4,R) totaled two in the game. Kort, Stassi and Jaquez drove in a run each.
Brinkerhoff (4-for-4,2R,2RBI) finished with a game-high four this and two RBI. First baseman Chris Benson (3-for-5,R) added three hits while Thorpe (2-for-3,R,RBI) and Arendse (2-for-3,RBI) collected two each.
The final game of the four-game series is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at Peccole Park.
