Pack Drop First Game Of Series 1-0 At No. 10 UC Irvine
Irvine, Calif. – The University of Nevada (7-11) baseball team was shutout 1-0 by No. 10 UC Irvine (11-5) in the first-game of a three-game series at Anteater Ballpark in Irvine, Calif. Friday night. With the loss the Wolf Pack are now 7-11 on the season while the Anteaters improved to 11-5.
After four-and-one half innings of scoreless baseball UCI scored a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 1-0 lead. With one down catcher Francis Larson tripled off the left center field wall. Pack starter Brock Stassi struck out designated hitter Jordan Leyland for the second out of the inning but right fielder Eric Deragisch doubled down the left field line to drive in what would be the only run of the game.
Nevada threatened in the sixth inning as Eaters starter Daniel Bibona walked left fielder Nick Melino and right fielder Brett Hart to start the inning. Catcher Travis Simas bunted both runners into scoring position but back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat. In the eighth inning Melino doubled off the center field wall with one down but was left stranded at second base when the inning ended.
Bibona (3-1) earned his third win of the season pitching seven shutout innings with 11 strikeouts. Eric Pettis (5) retired all three hitters he faced in the ninth inning for his fifth save of the season. Stassi (2-3) was tagged with the loss allowing just the one run in six innings and struck out five.
Kort (1-for-3) and Melino(1-for-2) collected the hits for the Pack. Larson (1-for-2,R), Deragisch (1-for-3,RBI) and first baseman Jeff Cusik (1-for-3) accounted for the three hits by UCI.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
