2009 Nevada Baseball Notes
POWERS EARNS 800TH WIN: Head coach Gary Powers recorded his 800th career victory when the Wolf Pack defeated Oregon 6-5 on March 12. Powers the longest tenured coach in the history of Nevada athletics is in his 27th year as skipper of the Pack. Coming into the 2009 season he ranked 26th among NCAA Division I active coaches in career victories. Currently his career mark stands at 801-631-4.
Achelpohl Named WAC Pitcher Of The Week: DENVER Nevada right-handed pitcher Derek Achelpohl has been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for Mar. 9-15.
Achelpohl, a senior from Madera, Calif. (Madera HS/Fresno City College), made two starts on the week at UC Davis and against Oregon. Achelpohl pitched two shutout innings and did not give up a hit in his start at UC Davis. He registered three strikeouts after facing seven batters in his two innings of work. Achelpohl threw 7.0 innings and picked up the 2-1 win against Oregon, compiling seven strikeouts while only allowing the single run. Overall on the week, Achelpohl pitched 9.0 innings with 10 strikeouts and a 1.00 ERA.
TEAM: Head coach Gary Powers won his 800th game on March 12 when the Pack defeated Oregon 6-5...Powers is in his 27th season and is the longest tenured coach in the history of Nevada athletics...Nevada ranks fifth in ERA(4.70), seventh in hitting(.232) and seventh in fielding(.957) in the WAC...The Pack snapped a season-high five-game losing streak on March 7 versus Washington downing the Huskies 3-2...Nevada’s season-high win streak was two games.
AT THE PLATE: Speedy CF-Westley Moss hit leadoff for the first time in the final game of the Oregon series and was 1-for-4 with a run scored...Moss has started the last 10 games in center and 12 on the season...OF-Nick Melino, the only switch hitter on the team, has started a team-high 10 games in left field and leads the team with a .310 batting average...4 of Melino’s 5 RBI this season came in the Oregon series last weekend...OF-Brett Hart hit .333(11-for-33) with three runs scored, three doubles and 2RBI during a 6-game hit streak that was snapped vs. Washington(3/7)...Hart’s 6-game hit streak is the longest this season on the team...C-Travis Simas has picked off five runners this season which leads the WAC and caught 9-of-20(45%) runners attempting to steal a base...SS-Kevin Rodland had his 15-game hit streak that dated back to last season snapped going 0-for-4 at San Diego State...Rodland hit .396(21-for-53) with 15 runs scored, 9RBI, seven doubles and two home runs during the hit streak...Rodland blasted a 3-run homer in the top of the 9th inning in the season opener to break a 4-4 tie and put the Pack on top 7-4 as they went on to defeat Gonzaga by that same score...Rodland’s current 4-game hit streak is the longest active streak on the team...IF-Matt Bowman hit two home runs in the Pack’s 8-4 victory over #10 Missouri(2/22)...All four of Bowman’s home runs this season have been solo shots and equals his home run total in 59 games played last season...Bowman’s four home runs is tied for sixth in the WAC...7 of Bowman’s 12 hits have gone for extra base, 4 home runs and 3 doubles...DH/P Brock Stassi’s first career hit was a three-run home run that tied the game with Gonzaga at 3-3 and the Pack went on to win 7-4...Bowman(15-2B, 3B) and Rodland(SS) have started all 16 games this season...3B-Tyson Jaquez’ first home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth put the Pack on top of Washington(3/7) 3-2 which proved to be the final score...1B-Shaun Kort had started 106 consecutive games at first base dating back to March 18, 2007 until March 7, 2009 when he came off the bench to pinch hit and play first base...Kort leads the team with 10 RBI...C/DH-Michael Turay has taken over as the teams right-handed DH and is hitting .333(9-for-27) in the position...OF-Aaron Henry hit his first home run in the silver & blue vs. #10 Missouri the opening weekend...Henry has five hits this season more than doubling his total of two from last year...Five of Nevada’s nine home runs have been solo shots while, three have been three-run homers and one was a two-run shot...Kort, Stassi and Rodland hit three-run homers, Jaquez blasted a two-run homer while Henry hit a solo shot and Bowman has four solo home runs...Nevada hit four home runs in its 8-4 victory over #10 Missouri(2/22)...3B-Joe Kohan made his first career start vs. Washington(3/7)...OF-Waylen Sing Chow has started 3 games in left field and 2 in center...IF/OF-Nick Leid earned his third start of the season and second in left field vs. Washington(3/7) going 1-for-4 at the plate...In three pinch hit opportunities C/DH Matt Langenfield has walked twice and been hit by pitch once.
ON THE MOUND: RHP-Derek Achelpohl made 2 starts last week, Tuesday at UC Davis pitching 2 shutout innings and Sunday vs. Oregon earning a win pitching 7 innings allowing one run which earned him WAC Pitcher of the Week honors...Achelpohl leads the WAC with a 0.56 ERA and is fifth with a .226 opponent batting average...LHP/DH-Brock Stassi continues to do double duty having started seven games at DH and four on the mound...Stassi struck out six which is one off his career high in the Pack’s 8-4 victory over #10 Missouri(2/22)...Stassi allowed 6 runs, 2 earned pitching a career-high 8.1 innings in his last start vs. Oregon and suffered his second loss of the season...Stassi and RHP-Sammy Miller have two wins each to account for 4 of the Pack’s 6 victories...Miller’s three saves tops the squad and is second in the WAC and he also ranks in four other categories in the conference...Miller earned a win at UC Davis and his third save of the season vs. Oregon last week...In his last start LHP-Chris Garcia had his best outing of the season vs. Oregon allowing 3 runs on 7 hits in a career-high 7.2 innings pitched...Garcia is 8th in the WAC with a .238 opponent batting average...Garcia struck out a career-high seven batters in his start vs. Missouri(2/20) but he also walked seven and threw five wild pitches as the Pack fell 12-1...After continuing to struggle with his control and lasting just 1.1 innings in his start vs. Oregon RHP-Stephen Bautista will move to the bullpen...Two of the Pack’s regular starters Stassi and Garcia are left-handed...RHP-Daniel Tinlin pitched 3.2 innings of 2 hit shutout baseball vs. Oregon(3/12) just two days after being hit by a linedrive at UC Davis to earn his first win at Nevada...Achelpohl, LHP-Jacob Anderson, RHP-Jayson McClaren, RHP-Tyler Graham, Tinlin and RHP-Beau Witsoe are all tied for second behind Miller with five appearances on the season...RHP-Brandon Petrangelo, RHP-Bryan Suarez and RHP-Jesse Rasner have pitched in three games this season...All 14 Pack pitchers this season have recorded a strikeout...15-of-45(33%) inherited runners have scored...RHP-Tyler Rogstad will be lost for the season as he will undergo Tommy John surgery...Rogstad joins RHP-Anthony Fagan who will also miss the season due to injury.
