Nevada Unable To Overcome Oregon State Big Innings In 17-10 Loss





Reno, Nev. - The University of Nevada(7-8) baseball team was unable to overcome three, five-run innings by 22nd ranked Oregon State(7-6) as the Beavers won today’s game on a cold and windy at Peccole Park 17-10.  The two squads have split the first two games of the series after the Pack won 10-1 on Friday.   The Wolf Pack stand at 7-8 on the season while the Beavers improved to 7-6.

OSU knocked around Pack starter Chris Garcia for five runs in the top of the second to take an early 5-0 lead.  Second baseman Lonnie Lechelt hit a two-run home as part of the big inning and left fielder Daniel Robertson drove in two with a single.  The Beavers scored a single run in the top of the third to make it 6-0.

Nevada began its comeback in the bottom of the third inning scoring five runs on three hits off OSU starter Jorge Reyes, to pull within one at 6-5.  First baseman Shaun Kort drove two with his second home run of the season.  In the fourth inning the Pack scored three runs to take the lead 8-6.  Right fielder Mike Hale tied the game, with his first career home run, leading off the inning.  Second baseman David Ciarlo drove in the second run of the inning and left fielder Matt Bowman plated the other.

In the top of the sixth OSU put together its second, five-run inning of the game with the aid of four hits.  Lechelt drove in two with a single and designated hitter Jason Orgata scored two with a double to make it 11-8.  Five more Beaver hitters crossed the plate in the top of the seventh inning and it was 16-8.  Catcher Ryan Ortiz drove in three with his second home run of the season.  OSU scored its 17th run on a solo home run by first baseman Jordan Lennerton in the top of the ninth.

The Pack got an RBI single from Jason Rodriguez in the bottom of the seventh inning and an RBI single from Kort in the ninth to make the final score 17-10.

Reliever Ryan Iodence(0-1) allowed four runs, three earned on three hits in the sixth and was tagged with the loss.  Josh Keller(2-0) got the win in relief for OSU giving up just one run on four hits in three innings of action.  Mark Grbavac(1) earned the save pitching the final three innings of the game allowing one run on two hits.

Kort(2-for-5,R,3RBI) and Ciarlo(2-for-4,R,2RBI) led the Pack with two hits each and two RBI apiece.

Lennerton(4-for-6,3R,RBI) and third baseman Drew George(4-for-6,2R,4RBI) had four hits each for the Beavers while Lechelt(3-for-4,R,5RBI) added three as OSU pounded out 20 in the game.  Lechelt drove in five runs on the day and George four.

The rubber game of the three-game series is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at Peccole Park.
