Simas Single Gives Pack 2-1 Victory At UC Davis In 11-innings





Davis, Calif. – University of Nevada (4-8) catcher Travis Simas singled in the top of the 11th to score first baseman Shaun Kort with the winning run as the Wolf Pack defeated UC Davis (2-9) 2-1 in 11-innings at Dobbins Stadium in Davis, Calif. Tuesday afternoon.  With the  victory the Pack improved to 4-8 while the Aggies fell to 2-9 on the season.  The victory was the 799th in head coach Gary Powers career, all coming at Nevada.

 

With the score tied 1-1 heading into the top of the 11th Kort walked with one down and third baseman Tyson Jaquez’ single through the right side moved him into scoring position.  Simas, who had come off the bench in the eighth inning, singled through the left side to score Kort with the winning run.  Reliever Sammy Miller retired the side in the bottom of the 11th to preserve the win.

 

After seven scoreless innings the Pack struck first in the top of the eighth inning with a single run.  With two down right fielder Brett Hart singled and scored on pinch hitter Nick Melino’s single to right field that got by the Aggie defender.

 

UCD scratched out a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to force extra innings.  With one down shortstop Scott Heylman singled and Corbin Cutshaw pinch ran.  Cutshaw was cut down at second base by Simas trying to steal for the second out of the inning.  The next three hitters reached base with third baseman Ty Kelly driving home the tying run with his RBI single.  With the bases loaded Miller got right fielder Ryan Scoma to fly out to end the inning which allowed the Pack to keep the game tied and score the winning run in the 11th.

 

Miller (2-0) earned the victory pitching three innings in which he allowed one run on four hits.  In total seven Pack pitchers took the mound in the game.  Tim Busbin (0-1) the fifth UCD pitcher suffered the loss allowing the run in the 11th.

 

Jaquez (2-for-4) and Hart (2-for-4) had two hits each as the Pack totaled eight in the game.  Kelly (2-for-4,RBI) and first baseman Eric Johnson (2-for-4) had two hits apiece for the Aggies as they totaled 11.

 

Next action for the Pack is Thursday when Oregon comes to Peccole Park to begin a four-game series with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Times Changed For Nevada Versus Oregon Baseball Games

 

The times for the University of Nevada versus Oregon baseball games scheduled for Thursday and Friday at Peccole Park in Reno, Nev. have been changed to 1:00 p.m. in order to better accommodate Wolf Pack fans who wish to attend the Western Athletic Conference basketball tournament at Lawlor Events Center.  All four games of the series that begins on Thursday and runs through Sunday will now begin at 1:00 p.m.
