Kort And Walsh Lead Pack Offense In 10-5 Victory Over UC Riverside As Scurry Tosses Seven Solid Innings

Reno, Nev. - The University of Nevada(4-5) baseball team knocked off UC Riverside(3-9) in the first-game of a three-game series at Peccole Park in Reno by a score of 10-5 Friday afternoon.  Winners of four in a row the Wolf Pack stand at 4-5 while the Highlanders dropped to 3-9 on the season.

Both teams scored a run in the first inning to get the day started.  UCR center fielder Carl Uhl doubled to start the game and came around to score on second baseman David Garcia's single.  Pack center fielder Jason Sadoian reached on an error to start the bottom of the first and scored on first baseman Shaun Kort's ground out to tie the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the second inning the Pack scored a pair of runs to go on top 3-1.  Sadoian scored his second run of the game after reaching on a single when Kort drove in his second run of the day with a sacrifice fly.  Designated hitter Matt Bowman singled behind Sadoian and scored on a throwing error by UCR shortstop Bryan Horst on a ground ball off the bat of left fielder Terry Walsh.

The Highlanders made it a one run game in the top of the fifth inning manufacturing a run without the aid of a hit.  Third baseman Ben Price walked, stole second base and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt where he scored on a ground out to make it 3-2.

The Pack exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to blow the game open.  Third baseman Jason Rodriguez drove in the first run with a single and Kort followed with a two RBI single to make it 6-2.  Walsh delivered the big blow blasting a three-run homer over the left field fence on a 3-2 count and it was 9-2.

In the top of the eighth inning the Highlanders plated three runs on two hits as the Pack bullpen was shaky after starter Rod Scurry left the game.  Garcia drove in the first run and left fielder Aaron Wible drove in two with a single.  Nevada got one of the runs back in the bottom of the eighth after shortstop Kevin Rodland hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to score Rodriguez to make the final score 10-5 as UCR failed to score in the top of the ninth inning.

Scurry(1-2) earned his first win of the season pitching seven solid innings of two run five hit baseball and struck out a season-high six.  Reliever Ryan Iodence was solid out of the bullpen pitching the final 1.2 innings of shutout baseball.  UCR starter Stephen Penney(0-2) lost for the second time after giving up seven runs, five earned in 5.1 innings of action.

Kort(3-for-4,R,4RBI) led the Pack with three hits and four RBI which were both game highs.  Sadoian(2-for-3R), Bowman(2-for-4,2R), Rodriguez(2-for-4,2R,RBI) and Walsh(2-for-4,R,3RBI) contributed two hits apiece.  Walsh drove in three with his first home run of the season.

Uhl(2-for-4,2R,RBI), Garcia(2-for-5,R,2RBI) and Wible(2-for-3,2RBI) had two hits apiece for the Highlanders.  Garcia and Wible tied for team-high honors with two RBI each.

Game two of the three-game series is set for Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
