RENO, Nev. - Trailing 6-5 the University of Nevada (7-3) baseball team scored eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat Central Arkansas (3-6) 13-6 on Saturday afternoon at Peccole Park. The win was the fourth in a row for the Wolf Pack, as they moved to 7-3 on the season while the Bears fell to 3-6.
UCA right fielder Jake Fuller doubled home two runs in the top the eighth inning to give the Bears a 6-5 advantage but it would be short lived as the bottom of the eighth was all Pack. Nevada scored eight runs on six hits and was aided by four walks in their half of the eighth inning. Third baseman Nick Leid and right fielder Ronnie Mitchell each drove in two runs as part of the big inning.
UCA took control of the game early as third baseman Blake Roberts hit a two-run shot over the left center field fence to give the Bears an early 2-0 advantage. Pack left fielder Brian Barnett evened the score with his second home run of the season and in as many games to knot the score at 2-2. Barnett's home run scored shortstop Kevin Rodland who was hit by pitch to start the inning.
The Bears regained the lead with a single run in the top of the fourth inning when center fielder Tye Throneberry doubled home Roberts with two down. Nevada got a two-RBI double from first baseman Shaun Kort in the bottom of the fifth inning to regain the lead 4-3. In the bottom of the sixth inning Rodland's single through the left side made it a two-run game as Mitchell scored after he started the inning with a single.
UCA got a sacrifice fly from shortstop Kyle Prevett in the top of the seventh inning to get the Bears within a run at 5-4. They then took the lead with two in the top of the eighth before the Pack rallied for the 13-6 victory.
Reliever Tyler Graham (1-0) earned his first win of the year pitching the final 1.2 innings. Graham entered the game in a save situation but allowed the go ahead runs to score in the eighth inning but eventually earned the win. Evan Cox (0-3) was tagged with the loss giving up three runs on two hits in two innings on the mound.
Center fielder Westley Moss (4-for-4,2R,RBI) had a perfect day at the plate with four hits which tied his career high. Designated hitter Brock Stassi (3-for-4,R,RBI) finished with three hits on the day and drove in one. Kort (2-for-4,R,RBI), Leid (2-for-5,R,2RBI) and Mitchell (2-for-4,2R,2RBI) all added two hits as the Pack totaled 17 in the game. Kort and Barnett drove in three runs each while Lied and Mitchell had two RBI apiece.
Roberts (3-for-4,2R,2RBI) led UCA with three hits and drove in two. First baseman Ethan Harris (2-for-4,2R) and catcher Michael Marietta (2-for-4,R) finished the game with two hits apiece.
The final game of the series is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
