Pack Sweep CS Monterey Bay In Doubleheader 24-7 And 16-0
Reno, Nev. - The University of Nevada(3-5) baseball team swept Cal State Monterey(4-13) in a doubleheader Tuesday at Peccole Park by scores of 24-7 and 16-0. Winners of three in a row the Wolf Pack are now 3-5 on the season while the Otters stand at 4-13.
In the first game Nevada hit two home runs in the bottom of the first inning to go on top 4-0. Designated hitter Matt Bowman hit a solo shot and freshman Nick Leid blasted a three-run homer. It was the first of the season for Bowman and the first of Leid’s career.
CSUMB scored five runs in the top of the second inning to take a one-run lead at 5-4. Catcher Rob Van Looy drove in three of those runs with a bases clearing triple.
Nevada responded by scoring 13 unanswered runs with six in the second inning, three in the third and four in the fourth inning to give the Pack a commanding 17-5 advantage. The Pack scored seven more runs in their last three at bats to make the final score 24-7.
Bowman(5-for-6,4RBI) and first baseman Shaun Kort(5-for-5,3R,5RBI) finished the game with a career-high five hits apiece. Bowman, Leid and catcher Matt Langenfeld hit home runs in the first game. Leid(4-6,3R,7RBI) drove in seven, Kort five, Bowman four and Langenfeld(1-for-6,2R,3RBI) three. In total seven Pack hitters finished with multiple hits in the game as Nevada posted season-highs with 24 runs and 26 hits.
Center fielder Justin Rios(2-for-3,R,RBI) led the Otters with two hits while Van Looy(1-for-3,3RBI) drove in three of the team’s seven runs in the game.
Freshman Bryan Suarez(1-0) got the win pitching three innings of relief allowing one run on one hit and struck out two. Daniel Bifano(1-4) suffered the loss allowing 10 runs on nine hits in the first game.
In game two four Pack pitchers combined to shutout the Otters 16-0 while the offense continued its hot hitting scoring 16 runs on 17 hits. Nevada leadoff hitter Jason Sadoian hit a home run in the bottom of the first inning to get things started in the second game and it was 1-0. In the second inning the Pack scored seven runs on four hits and it was 8-0. Kort hit a three run shot as part of the big inning.
In the fourth inning starting pitcher Dan Eastham stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and blasted at two-run shot over the center field fence to back his pitching performance.
Eastham(1-0) got the win tossing four shutout innings allowing just two hits in the game. CSUMB starter Norman Hebert(0-1) took the loss after giving up 11 runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings on the mound.
Second baseman David Ciarlo(3-for-3,3R,2RBI) had his fourth consecutive three hit game, scored three runs and drove in two to lead the offense attack. Sadoain(2-for-3,3R,2RBI), third baseman Jason Rodriguez(2-for-2,2R,2RBI), Kort(2-for-3,R,4RBI) and catcher Tyson Jaquez(2-for-4,2R,RBI) each contributed two hits to the 17 hit attack. Kort drove in a game-high four.
Seven different Otter hitters finished with a hit in game two.
The Pack continue their long homestand as they host UC Riverside this weekend for a three-game series starting Friday at 2:00 p.m. Saturday’s game gets underway at 1:00 p.m. and Sunday’s contest starts at noon.
