Pack Falls 14-2 To Gonzaga At Phoenix Tournament
Phoenix, Ariz. – The University of Nevada(1-2) baseball team committed seven errors in a 14-2 loss to Gonzaga(2-1) at an opening weekend tournament being hosted at Grand Canyon University’s Brazell Field in Phoenix, Ariz. The loss leaves the Wolf Pack 1-2 on the season while the Bulldogs improved to 2-1. On Friday the Pack rallied to defeat GU 7-4 in the season opener for both schools but lost 12-1 to tenth ranked Missouri.
Saturday night the Zags jumped to an 8-0 lead before the Pack scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to get on the scoreboard. Left fielder Nick Melino scored on shortstop Kevin Rodland’s ground out to score the first run of the game for Nevada. Rodland crossed the plate on center fielder Aaron Henry’s RBI single to make the score 8-2.
Gonzaga scored twice in the eighth inning and four more times in the ninth to make the final score 14-2.
Pack starter Tyler Rogstad (0-1) was tagged with the loss allowing six runs, five earned in 4.2 innings on the mound. Zags starter Ryan Carpenter (1-0) earned the victory giving up just two runs on four hits in 6.2 innings of action.
Catcher Travis Simas (2-for-3) led the Pack with two hits. Rodland extended his hit streak to 14-games with a double in the fourth inning which was Nevada’s first of the game.
Catcher Travis Van Winkle (3-for-5,2R,5RBI) was the hitting star for the Zags with three hits and five RBI. Three of his RBI came on a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning.
The Pack concludes tournament play with a 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time matchup with Missouri on Sunday.
