Pack Wins Marathon 15-9 At Santa Clara
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The University of Nevada (2-0) baseball team pounded out 22 hits and scored 15 runs to win a marathon game 15-9 over Santa Clara at Schott Stadium. The game lasted over four hours but with the win the Wolf Pack improved to 2-0 while the Broncos dropped to 0-2.
Trailing 5-1 after two innings the Pack scored the next seven runs to move in front for good. A four-run top of the third tied the score at 5-5. First baseman Shaun Kort's sacrifice fly in the fourth inning put Nevada in front 6-5. Two more runs in the top of the fifth made it 8-5.
SC scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to close the gap to a single run. Center fielder Westley Moss' single in the top of the seventh inning put the Pack on top by two and Kort delivered a three-run two-out home run to give Nevada a five-run cushion.
Designated hitter Brock Stassi's two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning was followed by third baseman Garrett Yrigoyen's solo shot to account for the final three runs of the game for the Wolf Pack.
Jesse Rasner (1-0) got the win in relief of Rickey Denham who pitched the first four innings of the game. Junior college transfer Jeremy Cole earned the save tossing the final three innings of the game. SC starter Alex Rivers (0-1) suffered the loss allowing six runs on 10 hits in four innings on the mound.
Pack right fielder Brett Hart (4-for-4,R,3RBI) was perfect at the plate collecting four hits and drove in three. Stassi (4-for-5,4R,2RBI) also had four hits and drove in a pair on his second home run of the season. Kort (3-for-4,3R,4RBI) finished with three hits and four RBI with three coming on his first home run of the season. Shortstop Kevin Rodland (2-for-4,2R,RBI) and Moss (2-for-6,R,RBI) totaled two hits each and drove in a run apiece.
The final game of the series is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
