Nevada Drops Home Opener To St. Mary's College 13-4
Reno, Nev. - The University of Nevada(4-9) baseball team lost its home opener to St. Mary’s College(7-8) 13-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Peccole Park in Reno. The Wolf Pack fall to 4-9 on the season while the Gaels improved to 7-8.
Nevada scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning on two hits to go in front 2-0. Second baseman David Ciarlo doubled in center fielder Jason Sadoian with the first run and later scored when first baseman Shaun Kort reached on an error by the Gaels left fielder. Kort was credited with sacrifice fly despite the left fielder dropping the ball on the play.
A nine-run top of the fifth inning by SMC put the game out of reach. The first seven Gael hitters of the inning reached base and scored in the big inning. In total 13 hitters came to the plate in the inning.
The Pack got a solo home run from shortstop Owen Mackedon in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the bottom of the sixth inning back to back doubles by right fielder Terry Walsh and left fielder Mike Hale scored Nevada’s fourth and final run of the game.
SMC got a solo home run from Ryan Young in the top of the seventh inning and added three more runs in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 13-4.
Pack starter Ben Colton(0-1) took the loss allowing five runs on six hits in four innings on the mound. Anthony Alliotti(2-1) got the win pitching five innings of three run ball for the Gaels. Michael Nisco(1) pitched the final four innings to earn his first save of the season.
Third baseman Jason Rodriguez(2-for-3) and Walsh(2-for-3,R) had two hits each to lead the Wolf Pack. Ciarlo, Kort, and Hale drove in runs.
SMC shortstop Joel Staples(4-for-6,2R,4RBI) had four hits and four RBI in the game. Second baseman Randy Wells(3-for-5,2R,2RBI) contributed three hits and two RBI to the victory.
Nevada returns to action on Friday hosting Buffalo(1-0) at 2:00 p.m. in the first-game of a three-game series. Saturday and Sunday’s games are set for 1:00 p.m.
