Nevada Knocks Off 10th Ranked Arizona State 12-8 For First Win Of The Season

Surprise, Ariz. - The University of Nevada (1-5) knocked off 10th ranked Arizona State(5-4) in the final game of the Surprise Arizona Tournament being hosted at Surprise Stadium. The win was the first of the season for Nevada as the squad is now 1-5. ASU fell to 5-4 on the year.
Nevada knocked ASU starter Drew Bowman out of the game scoring three runs on four hits in the top of the second inning. Left fielder Terry Walsh led off the inning with a solo home run over the left center field fence. Catcher Jordan Opdyke followed with a walk and with one down shortstop Leo Radkowski singled to center field. Both runners advanced on a balk which brought third baseman Ryan Foley to the plate. Foley's first collegiate hit scored both runners to give the Pack a three-run advantage.
In the bottom of the third inning the Sun Devils sent 10 batters to the plate and the first six collected hits of which five scored to give ASU the 5-3 lead. Center fielder Colin Curtis hit a two-run double as part of the big inning. Nevada sent nine players to the plate in the top of the fifth inning and six scored. Walsh delivered a two RBI double to tie the game at 5-5. Opdyke doubled in one run and later stole home in the inning. Radkowski belted a two-run homer that scored first baseman Daniel Eastham to conclude the six-run rally.
The Sun Devils came right back in the bottom of the fifth scoring a pair of runs on two hits to make the score 9-7. Designated hitter Brett Wallace doubled in the first run and came around to score on Rocky Laguna's sacrifice fly to deep right field.
The Pack tacked on a single run in the top of the sixth inning. Walsh drove in his fourth run of the game when second baseman David Ciarlo scored after drawing a walk to reach base.
Radkowski and left handed pitcher Steve Masten were named to the all-tournament team.
Nevada's next action will be the home opener versus intrastate rival UNLV on Friday at 2:00 p.m. The game will be the first on the new FieldTurf at Peccole Park.
