Riverside, Calif. - UC Riverside(4-4) pitcher James Simmons(1-0) allowed just two hits in pitching a complete game as the Highlanders downed Nevada(2-2) 6-1 in the first game of a doubleheader at the Riverside Sports Center in Riverside, Calif. Saturday afternoon. The loss dropped the Wolf Pack to 2-2 on the season while UCR evened their mark at 4-4.
UCR tallied a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the early 2-0 lead. Left fielder Matt Cunningham reached on an error to start the inning then scored on catcher Jeff Abney's double. With two down center fielder Brett Bigler singled home Abney with the second run of the inning.
Wolf Pack third baseman Jacob Butler broke up a no hit bid by Simmons with a single through the left side in the top of the seventh inning. Butler advanced to second base on a passed ball and scored on first basmen Ben Mummy's RBI single to right field to make it a one-run game at 2-1.
In the bottom of the seventh inning UCR scored four runs on two hits to breakup a close game. Right fielder Aaron Grant doubled in the first two runs in the inning and designated hitter Nick Salotti tripled in the third run of the four-run inning as the Highlanders led 6-1 which was the final score.
Pack starter Travis Sutton(0-1) took the loss allowing four runs but just one was earned in his 6.2 innings of action. Sutton struckout five and walked just two in the game.
Butler(1-for-2, R) and Mummy(1-for-3, RBI) had the only hits for the Pack. Bigler(2-for-4,RBI), and second baseman Andrew Garcia(2-for-3,R) led UCR with two hits each. Grant had a game high two RBI in the game.
The Pack will look to avoid the doubleheader sweep in game two on Saturday. Game two is slated to be a seven inning contest.
