Nevada Falls 9-8 At UC Riverside
Riverside, Calif. - The University of Nevada(2-4) baseball team lost its third game in a row falling 9-8 at UC Riverside(3-0) on Saturday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex in Riverside, Calif. The Highlanders swept the series to improve to 3-0 while the Wolf Pack fell to 2-4 on the season..
The Pack jumped on top for the first time in the series scoring a run in the top of the first inning. Shortstop Chris Siewert singled to start the game. With second baseman David Ciarlo at the plate Siewert broke for second base and the relay throw by Highlander first baseman Mark Samuelson went into left field as he scampered to third base. Ciarlo's ground out scored him from third base and the Pack were on top 1-0.
The lead was short-lived as UCR scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to tie the score at 1-1. Left fielder Aaron Wible walked and later scored on right fielder Mike Vass' RBI single up the middle.
In the top of the second Nevada got the run back when left fielder Terry Walsh led off the inning with a solo home run over the left field fence. It was Walsh's first home run of the season.
The Highlanders scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning to go in front 3-2. Second baseman Ben Price scored the first run with an RBI single and Wible plated the other with a sacrifice fly.
UCR tacked on three more runs on three hits in the bottom of the third inning to extend its lead to 6-2. A Pack error and a walk also contributed to the Highlander's three-run inning.
In the top of the fifth inning the Pack sent nine players to plate and four scored to knot the game at 6-6. First baseman Shaun Kort's two RBI single tied the game. Ciarlo drove in a run and the other scored on an error.
The Highlanders took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth inning when shortstop Jaime Pedrosa blasted a two-run homer to right field. Pedrosa's home run scored first baseman Mark Samuelson who drew a walk. UCR added another run in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 9-6. Wible's sacrifice fly scored Price who walked to start the inning.
Nevada took advantage of four walks in the top of the eighth inning to score two runs to close the gap to one at 9-8. Ciarlo scored the first run on an infield single and catcher Konrad Schmidt forced home the second run with a bases loaded walk. The Pack was retired in order in the ninth as UCR held on for the victory.
Reliever Kyle Howe (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs in 2.2 innings of action. D.J. Smith(1-0) got the win for UCR pitching two innings of scoreless relief. Stephen Penny(1) earned the save tossing 1.1 scoreless innings.
Ciarlo(2-for-4,R,3RBI) led the team with a pair of hits and three RBI. Kort contributed two RBI in the game.
Pedroza(2-for-3,R,2RBI,HR), Samuelson(2-for-3), and Price(2-for-2,4R,3RBI) had two hits apiece for the Highlanders. Price scored four runs and drove in three for UCR..
Next action for Nevada is Friday when they begin a three-game series at Cal Poly at Baggett Stadium in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Game times are Friday at 6 p.m. followed by 1 p.m. contests on Saturday and Sunday.
