Nevada Baseball Team Begins Practice Friday In Prepartion For Season Opener Feb. 22
Reno, Nev. - The University of Nevada baseball team will begin practice in preparation for the 2008 season on Friday at Peccole Park. The Wolf Pack open the season for the first time at home versus a difficult opponent as 2007 College World Series participant UC Irvine comes to Reno for a three-game series Feb. 22-24. The 2008 season marks the 26th at Nevada for Wolf Pack head coach Gary Powers.
Coach Powers and his staff will welcome 33 players to the first practice on Friday. The Pack return 16 letterwinners, six position starters, and two members of the rotation from last season’s squad that went 35-26 overall and finished second in the Western Athletic Conference with a 15-9 record. Nevada also finished second at the WAC Tournament after placing third the year before.
The six position starters that return are first baseman Shaun Kort, second baseman David Ciarlo, third baseman Jason Rodriguez, center fielder Jason Sadoian left fielder Terry Walsh, and right fielder Mike Hale. The two members of the rotation that are back for their senior seasons are right-handers Rod Scurry and Kyle Howe. Also returning after missing all but five games last season after tearing his right pectoral muscle is junior Matt Bowman. Bowman is a two-year starter who played left field his freshman year and third base as a sophomore.
Nevada plays 32 of its 57 games at home this season and 18 of the first 22 are slated for Peccole Park.
