RIVERA NAMED WAC PITCHER OF THE WEEK: DENVER Junior pitcher Mario Rivera has been named the Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for January 22-28.
Rivera, from San Bernardino, Calif. (Western Arizona CC), pitched 5.1 innings and allowed just three hits and one unearned run in Nevada’s 6-1 win over St. Mary’s on Sunday.  He walked one and struck out four in picking up his first win for the Wolf Pack. 


Pack Notes: Nevada opened the season 2-1 for the fifth time since 2000...IF/OF Matt Bowman extended his hit streak to 10-games which includes the final 7 games of last season...IF/P Shaun Kort hit a home run in his first collegiate at bat, the 3 run shot came as a pinch hitter in Saturday’s game at SMC...Nevada head coach Gary Powers is in his 25th season of directing the Wolf Pack baseball program in 2007...Powers, the longest tenured coach in the history of Nevada athletics, coached his 1,300th game versus St. Mary’s College last Friday...Bowman was named to the Wallace Award Watch List, the award honors the college player of the year...senior pitcher Ryan Rodriguez and junior designated hitter Terry Walsh were named to the 2007 WAC Coaches’ Preseason team...Rodriguez was named to the preseason WAC team for the second year in a row...Rodriguez made his 50th consecutive start on Friday at Saint Mary’s College...Rodriguez has started every game since coming to campus as a freshmen and recorded a strikeout in all 50  outings...Rodriguez ranks fourth with 23 career wins, fifth with 285.2 innings pitched, and fourth in strikeouts with 233 at Nevada...The Pack rotation of Rodriguez, Rod Scurry, and Mario Rivera all pitched 5+ inningst the opening weekend...Nevada’s bullpen allowed 5-of-9 inherited runners to score the opening weekend...The Pack will open the season with 12 road games with the home opener slated for Tuesday, Feb. 20 versus St. Mary’s...Peccole Park will be the site of the 2007 WAC Tournament May 24-27...Nevada was picked to finish fourth in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll behind Fresno State, Hawai`i, and Louisiana Tech.
