Bowman Blasts Two Home Runs As Pack Take Series With 6-1 Victory At St. Mary's
Moraga, Calif. The University of Nevada(2-1) baseball team won its season opening series after scoring a 6-1 victory over St. Mary’s College(1-2) at Louis Guisto Field in Moraga, Calif. Sunday afternoon. With the victory the Wolf Pack won the final two games of the series after the Gaels won 5-4 on Friday the Pack prevailed 6-5 on Saturday.
Nevada right fielder Matt Bowman hit a two-out solo home run in the top of the first inning to give the Wolf Pack an early 1-0 advantage. A single unearned run in the top of the second inning made it 2-0 Pack. Left fielder Mike Hale singled with one down and moved around to third on second baseman David Ciarlo’s hit through the right side on a hit and run. After Gaels second baseman Randy Wells was unable to handle the throw in from right field Hale scampered home to score the run.
SMC scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning to make it a one run game at 2-1. Catcher Ian Gordon reached on a two base throwing error by Pack shortstop Owen Mackedon and moved to third base on a balk. Right fielder Kenny Fuglerud’s single scored Gordon with the Gaels first run of the game.
The Pack scored three runs with two out in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 5-1. Ciarlo singled to start the inning and later scored on first baseman Shaun Kort’s two-out RBI single. Bowman then blasted his second home run of the game over the right field fence to score two more runs.
Mackedon’s bases loaded sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning scored catcher Konrad Schmidt who was hit by pitch to start the inning. With the run the Pack were on top 6-1.
Making his first start for the Wolf Pack right-hander Mario Rivera(1-0) allowed one unearned run and just three hits while striking out four and walking one to get the win in his 5.1 innings on the mound. Michael Nisco(0-1) suffered the loss allowing six runs, four earned in 5.1 innings of action.
Bowman(3-for-4,2R,3RBI,2HR) was the hitting star with his game high three RBI coming on his two home runs. He also extended his hit streak to 10-games, seven coming last season. Ciarlo(3-for-4,R) tied Bowman for game high honors with his three hits.
Fuglerud(2-for-4,RBI) led the Gaels with two hits and drove in their only run of the game.
Next action for the Pack is Thursday at UC Riverside when they play the first game of a three-game series with the Highlanders starting at 3:00 p.m. Friday’s games is also at 3:00 p.m. with Saturday’s game being a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
Bowman extended is hit streak to 10 games with his solo home run in the top of the first inning.
