LAS VEGAS - The University of Nevada (31-26) baseball team won its third consecutive elimination game at the 2014 Mountain West Championship defeating New Mexico (37-20-1) 9-4 in 11 innings at UNLV's Earl E. Wilson Stadium. Earlier in the day the Wolf Pack defeated Fresno State 10-2 to send the Bulldogs home.
The Pack improved 31-26 on the season while UNM dropped to 37-20-1. Nevada plays its fourth elimination game on Saturday at 3 p.m. versus the loser of tonight's game between UNLV and San Diego State.
With the game tied at two after nine innings the Pack scored a run in the top of the 10th on an error to take a 3-2 lead. The Lobos took advantage of a Nevada error to score in the bottom of the 10th to knot the score at three.
The Pack exploded for six runs on seven hits in the top of the 11th to take control 9-3. UNM scored once in the bottom of the inning to make the final score 9-4.
The Lobos got a two-run homer from Chas Harris in the third to take the early 2-0 lead. Pack center fielder Trenton Brooks singled home two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at two where it remained until the 10th inning.
Brooks (3-1) earned the win in relief allowing one run on five hits in 2.1 innings to win for the third time this season. Victor Sanchez (4-1) suffered his first loss giving up five run, four earned on five hits in two innings on the mound.
In addition to getting the win on the mound, Brooks (2-for-6,4RBI) who stated the game in center field had two hits and four RBI. He had four hits and four RBI in the FS win. Third baseman Scott Kaplan (3-for-4) added three hits. Outfielder TJ Friedl (2-for-2,R,RBI) and catcher Jordan Devencenzi (2-for-3,R) contributed two hits each as the Pack totaled 15 in the game.
Sam Haggerty (3-for-7,R) and Chas Harris (3-for-6) had three hits apiece for the Lobos. Harris drove in two with his eighth home run of the season.
